For a moment, Hayley looked at Mel, stunned. She looked inside the living room then turned to back to her before tearing up and letting out a long laugh.
"You really had me going there for a minute!" she said, wiping a tear from her eye. "That was a good Joke, Mel." she hugged her again. "Thanks, sis. I needed a laugh after a year away from home!"
Mel tried to protest but Hayley was already walking away, carrying her luggage up the stairs, still giggling at her 'joke'. Unknown to Mel, Hayley was rattled at the thought of John having power. She knew from her year at school that not all witch families were as close as yours, some witch families were overzealous or even cruel to their witch boys. Hayley knew that if you had a power of your own, these abused witch boys would storm the house looking for it.
"She better be joking." she thought with a chill.
Upon reaching the top of the stairs, she saw you walking out of your room. You were so distracted with your discovery that you did not notice her at first and you were startled when she called your name. "Hayley!" you said, giving her a warm hug. "When did you finally get home?"
"Just now." said Hayley, smiling. "It's good to be back." you opened your mouth to speak but she cut you off. "I know you are dying to know where I've been all this time, everyone is, mom and I will explain everything when the time is right, please trust me, John."
Hayley had expected you to protest but instead, you merely sighed. "It's not like this family to keep secrets, sis." you said, causing her to wince. "Then again, I was told that things happen for a reason."
With that said, you walked away from her. Once you were down the stairs, she whispered, "You have no idea."
As the day progressed, Hayley became more concerned as you did not push her for any further explanation as she had thought you would. "I hope Mel was joking." she thought.
Hayley wanted to test Mel's claim but she did not want to take the risk that her sister was only joking. She knew that the truth would come out eventually, leading you to fall into magic resistance training. She grinned at the thought of you being a little girl for a while but she also knew that there was a chance that things could get out of hand. Finally, she decided to talk to mom.
"I'm worried about John." she said, after explaining what Mel had told her. "If he does have some type of power..."
"I'm sure Mel was only playing around, Hayley." said mom, hiding her own concerns. "She and Hannah both discovered their magic a few days ago when the flame test sparked early." she sighed. "I'm worried too, John is going to soon find himself in the midst of four witches who all want to play."
Hayley nodded. "You, to give him a resistance to magic, Mel to have a true twin for a while, Hannah to have a playmate for a few days..."
Mom nodded with her. "Also, you to teach your sisters control." she said. "Hannah and Mel will want to play with John, using their magic, and there is a chance that things could get out of hand." she placed her hands onto her shoulders. "John is going to be in for a rough few days once our secret is revealed, I need you to stay focused, Hayley."
"I'll try, mom." replied Hayley. "I just don't want to lose him."
"None of us do, honey." said mom, calmly. "I've been worried about John turning into a girl due to his twin connection to Mel since he was born. I'm also worried about one or all of us breaking him or pushing him into running away or worse, all for the sake of having a little 'fun'."
Hayley nodded. "Maybe we should talk to Mel and Hannah before we reveal our secret." she said.
"I agree." said mom. "John is tough and has a good heart, we don't want to break that. I'll arrange for John to be away on the eve of his and Mel's birthday, that is when we girls will have a serious talk."
Meanwhile, unaware of the conversation taking place in mom's study, you were turning the pages of the magic book, becoming more and more fascinated. You dared not try any of the 'spells' inside the book in fear that they might actually work but you did take notes on the highlights of the book. You knew that someone in your house was studying and practicing a magic to your science and made it a point to find out who. You turned to your holographic teacher and mentor, Jack, annoyed. He had refused to answer any of your questions regarding the book. Little did you know that the hologram was programed not to interfere with family affairs and the revealing of magic was one of them.
"I guess I'll have to find out who the witch in my family is the hard way." you said to yourself. "I had already questioned Hayley but she proved unwilling to talk, which leaves Mel, Hannah, and mom." you drummed your fingers onto the flat surface of the work station. "I'll have to question them indirectly so not to reveal my own secret, that I will reveal on mine and Mel's birthday."
Who do you decide to talk to first?
