You decided to talk to Mel first, not knowing that it was her who had thrown the water globe at you. Knocking on her door, the sounds of her sobbing reached your ears. "Who is it?" she asked.
"It's me, John." you replied. "Are you okay?"
Mel opened the door and looked at you as if you and she had fought recently. "I'm alright." she said. "I'm just frustrated about something right now."
Momentarily placing your own issue aside, you asked, "Do you want to talk about it?"
"I can't." said Mel, looking worried.
"Why not?" you asked.
Mel shook her head, knowing that revealing the family secret to you, despite what she saw would get her into trouble with mom and Hayley. "I promised not to tell anyone, okay?"
You shook your head. "Mel, if something or someone is bothering you, bottling it up is only going to make it worse." you told her. "If you can't tell me, then please tell mom."
Mel looked at you, worried. "Mom knows." she said, honestly. "I'm still worried though."
You sighed, thinking it was a bully or a friend that had broken her heart. "Mel, if someone is hurting you..."
With that, she closed the door before you could say or ask anything else. "Something or someone is definitely getting under her skin." you thought, hearing her crying again. "I'll have to remember to rattle some bones at school tomorrow."
