Suddenly, your mother hurried into the room, quickly seizing the situation, and immediately flicked her had at Megan and Harry. The two were instantly thrown off their feet, into the air. They gave out a short scream before they each landed in a chair, unconscious.
"MOM!" you yelled.
You quickly summoned your pyrokinetic flame and stood between your mother and your friends, defending them. To your surprise, your mother summoned a similar flame and casually took a step towards you.
"I am a very powerful witch, John." she said, scolding. "You do not want to challenge me, you WILL lose."
She saw you glancing back at your friends and her face softened. "I see." she said. "Don't worry about Megan and Harry, they'll be fine. They will wake up in about an hour, remembering nothing of what happened here. So, please be a good boy... and stand down."
You were reluctant at first then you canceled the flame by closing your fist. Soon after, your mother did the same. For a while, you and your other stared at each other as if you were old enemies facing off after a long absence. But then, you began to tear up. "Uncle Jack said studying his book would save the family." you said, beginning to sob. "But, here we are about to jump at each other's throats!"
You then fell to your knees, sobbing as you gripped your head with one hand. "I'm so confused!"
Your mother looked at you, bewildered for a moment then walked to the coffee table and saw the two books sitting side by side. She smiled, letting out a low sigh, shaking her head, then walked over and knelled down before you.
"My little boy is growing up." she said, softly, rubbing her hand in your hair.
You look up at her, even more confused than ever. "What?"
Your mother stifled a laugh. "Your uncle, Jack so wanted to be a part of our world of witches. Unfortunately, only girls can work magic, also, only girls can read the magic book. He did not want anything to do with being a girl, so I cast a spell on him that would allow him to read it. He then stole my sister's copy and studied it. I do not know how YOU managed to read the book but that is a discussion for another time."
Your tears quickly dried as you listened to your mother's tale, becoming more surprised as she continued.
"He knew that he would never be able to work magic, so he instead turned to science. He studied and practiced all the forbidden and dark sciences that had produced monsters in the past. In the years that followed, from what he had told me when he finally confessed, he had taken those forbidden sciences to such a great height that they BECAME MAGIC."
Your mother paused to allow you to process everything she had told you. It did not take long, with your high intelligence, and you looked up at her, shocked and horrified. "So, in a dark way, I HAVE been studying magic."
Your mother nodded. "In a way, yes." she replied softly. "If your uncle were not dead right now, I would wring his neck for giving you his book without first asking me." she sighed. "But what is done is done and, from what I can see, you have become very talented in Chaotic Science. We witches have a name for that science, psudo magic."
You hung onto every word your mother was saying like a child listening to his favorite bedtime story. Your eyes glistened with understanding as you let out a low laugh of your own.
"Here I was, wondering how I was going to ask about the magic book, only to learn that I have been practicing a type of magic myself all along."
"Technically, it's not magic." said your mother, touching your cheek, "It's science so advanced, it become very similar to magic." her face and voice suddenly turned very serious. "I warn you, though, John. The talents of this family, especially yours, MUST remain a secret!"
"Your secret is safe with me, mom." you promised. "If my secret safe with you."
Your mother smiled at you sweetly. "It's a deal."
You shared a hug with your mother as she whispered, "No more secrets in the family. What a relief!"
Then, caught up in the moment, you began to cry. "I'm sorry, Mommy!" you sobbed.
"Sorry for what?" asked your mother, now worried.
"For challenging you. I'm so sorry! I was worried about my friends! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
Then, your mother smiled and began to giggle as she began to slowly rock you back and forth.
"It's okay, John." she told you. "I forgive you. At least now, I know how you were able to read the magic book."
You look up to her, still sobbing. "How?"
