You stared at your Hayley and your mother as they walked towards you. Hayley saw you grip your book tightly and frowned. She knew that asking you part with it would only cause you to shut her out.
"There is no sense is keeping this a secret any longer, John." said your mother, motioning you to sit down as she and Hayley did themselves. "I am a witch, so is Hayley. Mel and Hannah, as I am sure you've figured out, are will be witches as well, when they are ready."
"Yeah." you said, calmly. "I figured that much out for myself."
"What you have been studying and practicing is what we witches call Pseudo magic, or 'like' magic." said Hayley, taking over. "It is a science so advanced, it almost literally becomes magic. However, only girls can be witches. for that reason, only girls are supposed to be able to read the magic book. To a boy, the pages would appear to be blank. How is it that you were able to read it?"
You thought about her question for a moment then answered, "I have a theory."
"Go on." said your mother.
"A few days ago, I had an argument with a girl at school, who she was is not important." you said. "However, she stated that I will never understand girls. I took it as a challenge and used my science, or pseudo magic as you call it, to temporarily rewire my mind to feminine so I could get an idea of their thoughts and emotions... part of that rewiring might not have reverted back to male."
Hayley and your mom's eyes widened in surprise, your skills in Chaotic Science were much more advanced than they had first suspected....
"John, pseudo magic, or chaotic science, is very dangerous, in the wrong hands." said your mother.
Your face hardened. "So is witchcraft." you countered, tightly hugging your book.
You knew where your mother was going with her words but you were not willing to give up something you were just now beginning to master.
Your mother sighed, wearily then turned to Hayley who again took over the conversation.
"Yes, Jon." she said, gently easing your arms down. "You have a valid point. Our point is mom has been trained by a master in magic and I just returned from such training. You however, are teaching yourself, this Chaotic Science through trial and error. As such, accidents could happen and you or someone close to you could get hurt... or worse."
You could not argue with your sister's reasoning. You nodded, your face softening. "Point." you said.
Hayley sighed. She had caught your attention and now she had to choose her words carefully. She was then certain that you were not willing to part with your book, let alone your practice. She decided to a much different approach to resolve the issue.
"We are not asking you to just give up your practice." she said. "It's far too late for that, you are obviously hooked on it. We are, however, asking you to let us help you master it in a more controlled way."
Now Hayley had your full attention. Your lightened your grip on your book. Seeing this, your mother leaned towards you and you tightened your grip on it again. Hayley threw her a light look of warning then turned to you.
"Explain." you said.
"As I am sure you have noticed, witchcraft and chaotic science are VERY similar." explained Hayley. "With that being the case, we can help you, using our experience in magic, to help you control your science more safely and keep it it secret from the outside world."
"Pseudo magic is a witch's worst nightmare, John." your mother said, quietly. "It is a highly unstable science that can cause incredible damage and worse, it can combat magic."
"There are certain witches out there who would go to extremes to prevent you from practicing that science for that very reason, John." added Hayley. "However, if you were to be trained by a master in magic, they may not see you as a threat."
You thought about their words for a moment then let out a long sigh. "I can't argue with that." you said softly.
"I foolishly left my book in the living room." said your mother. "The same might happen with you. But, your book carries an even greater threat."
You turned to your mother, startled. "What is that?"
Hayley swallowed hard before she said. "Unless certain precautions had been made, ANYONE can read it."
Hayley inched closer to you. "John, you have been able to hide the book well, thus far, but we can hide it even better." she said. "Please let me hide it for you. I promise I will bring it out when you really need it."
You look at your sister, then to your mother, who nodded. Neither of them knew what you were thinking as you tightly hugged your book, reluctant.
"Do I have your word?" you asked.
"You have my word." promised Hayley. she held up her hand. "Pinkie swear."
You looked at her for a moment then sighed. "Very well." you said. "I acce-"
Then, before you could finish, Hannah burst into the room and stood in front of you, holding up a piece of paper with a crayon drawing on it.
"I drew you a picture, John!" she said, smiling mischievously. "I call it 'Stinky head'!"
Your face hardened once more as you again tightened your grip on your book turned to Hannah. She had annoyed you with her childish antics earlier, in the morning, and now she was at it again. Your mother and Hayley also threw her a dirty look as they were so close to convincing you to surrender your book.
"Now is not the time, Hannah." said your mother, scolding.
"We are having a conversation here." you added, trying to remain calm. "So please... just go away."
Hannah suddenly got angry because you did not want to play her game and crumpled up the piece of paper and threw it at your head. As she did, she summoned a small amount of magic and made the paper feel like a brick as it hit your forehead, leaving a mark.
"How do you like that, John!?!" she asked, immaturely. "I can do something you CAN'T!"
Now it was your turn to be angry. You dropped your book then slowly rose to your feet, with Hayley and your mom watching with a worried look on their faces.
"Nice going, squirt!" said Hayley, under her breath. "You're going to ruin everything!"
"Are you looking for a duel, Hannah?" you asked her, angrily.
You then summoned your pyrokinetic flame to your hand, causing her to let out a short scream.
