Hayley looked at Mel for a moment then laughed.
"You really had me going there for a minute!" she said, wiping a tear from her eye. "Thanks, Mel. I needed a laugh after a year away from home!"
Mel stomped her foot, which she always did when she was angry. "I'm not joking!" she said, near tears. "I'm not lying either! I threw a water globe at him and he canceled it with a fire ball, I swear it, Hayley!"
Hayley then turned serious. "Listen, Mel." she said, not yet annoyed. "Boys can not work magic. They can not even read the magic book, it would appear to be blank to them."
"I promise you, Hayley." said Mel, now in tears. "I saw John working magic!"
Hayley sighed. "Okay, Mel." she said. "Let's go find John and ask him about it."
Mel sighed in relief and smiled. But that vanished then Hayley added, "But if this is just a joke and John finds out about us because of it, everything that happens to him will be on you!"
"You'll say sorry for that when you find out I'm telling the truth!" snapped Mel, crying.
"Fine." replied Hayley, rolling her eyes. "If John is indeed working magic, I'll apologize to you, okay?"
She sighed, not really in the mood for games. She was told that, because Mel and you were twins, it was possible that you would have magic within you but you would not be able to use it as you were a boy. However, if you came into physical contact with a witch, say her or Mel, your magic would channel through them. She grinned, knowing that such use of magic would eventually turn you into a girl and the entire family would be made up of witches.
"Let's check his bedroom." she suggested. "If he's not there, we'll just confront him after dinner where Mom or Hannah can't overhear."
"Hayley, John had volunteered to do everyone's laundry everyday after school to help mom." said Mel. "I think he's hiding out down there, somewhere, teaching himself magic."
Hayley suddenly became thoughtful. "When did he start doing this?"
"A few days after you left." replied Mel. "Before that, he cringed at laundry duty."
"I know." agreed Hayley. "That DOES sound a bit unlike him." she gave a low giggle. "It looks like you and I have a little mystery on our hands, sis. What do you say we solve it together?"
Mel smiled, now excited. She loved mysteries, as did Hayley. "Where do we start, sis?"
