"I'm listening." you said, curious.
"Mom, Mel, and I are witches." said Hayley. "We have the power of magic." she summoned a harmless flame to her hand to prove it. "Hannah will be a witch as well, once she is old enough. Sorry, but only girls can be witches. You will never have that power, being a boy."
You could not help smile as you then summoned a flame of your own to your hand. Hayley let out a short scream as did Mel, even though she had seen it before. "Magic is not the ONLY power in this world, sis." you said. "I am a Chaotic Scientist."
"See, Hayley?" she asked. "I TOLD you!"
"So, is was you who threw that water globe at me, Mel." you said, with a grin. "Having a little fun at my expense?" you laughed. "Did I surprise you when I canceled it?"
She turned to you, blushing as you canceled the flame then summoned the magic book. "This must be yours." you said, handing it to her. "It made very interesting reading. I must say, though, I was very surprised by how similar it was to my book of Chaotic Science."
"Wait a minute!" said Hayley, quietly. "Only girls should be able to read the magic book. To boys, like you, it would appear to be blank, how were you able to read it?"
You blushed slightly. "I had an argument with Mel a few days ago." you explained. "She told me that I would never understand girls. So, I used my Chaotic Science to temporarily rewire my brain to be female."
"You said temporarily." said Hayley, confused. "It all changed back, right?"
"Most of it did." you replied. "Several pieces of that rewiring, scattered through out my brain, did not revert back. Not enough to physically change me but enough so I remained part female inside my mind, indirectly allowing me to read the magic book."
"That's not possible!" breathed Hayley, shocked. "Science is not that advanced... not yet."
You laughed, thinking of the irony of it all. Neither Hayley or Mel suspected the power that Chaotic Science held. It was made up of all the forbidden sciences that modern scientists avoided for good reason due to its dangerously unstable nature.
"What's so funny?" asked Mel, annoyed.
"Chaotic Science stands apart from any other study." you said, laughing. "It a science so advanced, it becomes a magic all its own!"
Hayley let out a loud, startled gasp, covering her mouth. "Pseudo magic!" she whispered.
During her year away from home, training, she learned of a great fear among witches. The fear that science would, someday, become so advanced that it would begin to mimic true magic. She knew that there were many a rogue witch in the world that would go to any lengths to steal that power. There was one in particular, Eva Morgana. She had challenged her grandmother, the head witch at the time and lost. She was stripped of her power and swore revenge on the family of the head witch. Your mother was the new head witch and Hayley was next in line.
"You're so quiet, all of a sudden." you said, amused. "Did I shock you?"
"You could say that." whispered Hayley.
You smiled at that. "Don't worry, I'm still me inside." you said. "Just as you, Mel, Mom, and Hannah are still the same, despite your magic powers."
Hayley managed to give you a grin, although she was shaking inside.
"Um... Do you have anyone teaching you this science?" she asked.
"I thought you'd ask that." you said. "I follow lessons, left to me by uncle Jack. He's the one who gave me the book." your face hardened. "I will tell you nothing further unless I feel you need to know."
Hayley started to protest but you waved your hand and she and Mel suddenly found themselves standing inside their respective bedrooms, shocked and surprised.
"He's practicing a power similar to magic!" thought Hayley, disturbed by her meeting with you. "I'll have to apologize to Mel for not believing her." she frowned. "He seems powerful enough to match a rogue witch but still, he really has no one helping him through his training." her frown deepened. "If he has an accident... What am I to do!?!"
