"John can be very stubborn." said mom, frustrated. "Especially with this secret he his keeping from us." she began to tear up. "We used to be so close."
"Did you ask him about his odd behavior?" asked Hayley.
"I confronted him a number of times over the year but I could not mention our secret." replied mom. "Both Mel and Hannah talked to him as well." she sobbed a little. "John insisted that there was nothing wrong and that everything was fine at school. I even asked Megan and Harry... they are worried about him as well."
Hayley sighed. "I saw John reading a magic book, mom." she said.
Mom looked at Hayley, startled. "Boys can't read the magic book." she told her."You know that."
"I know that, mom." said Hayley. "None the less, he was reading it with some kind of 'science' book." she paused, swallowing hard. "He conjured a small but bright flame into his hand, mom. I heard him questioning if he was learning science or witchcraft."
"How can he have any power at all?" asked mom. then something came to her and he let out a low gasp.
"You know something, mom?" asked Hayley.
"I suspect something." replied mom. "But I can not say until I am certain that I am right."
Hayley gave mom a frustrated look and mom sighed. "I'm sorry, Hayley." she said. "But I must be certain before I speak of it. If I am right, John is in way over his head. If I am wrong... I don't know."
"Then we are back to square one." said Hayley.
"Except for the fact that John has some kind of power." said mom. "We just don't know form where." then she thought, "Jack, please tell me you didn't! That science is far too dangerous in the hands of a little boy!"
"Mom?" asked Hayley.
Mom turned to her and smiled. "Why don't you take a night flight on your broomstick, honey?" she suggested. "It always helps to clear your head." she paused, hating to put her on the spot. "You will need it when you confront John in the morning."
Elsewhere, inside your laboratory, you stood upon a light platform, facing a holographic likeness of uncle Jack, who looked at you with concern. "Scans indicate that your stress levels are very high, John." it said. "What is troubling your mind?"
You briefly explain the situation, staying within the parameters of the 'Jack' program and finished with, "I am not uncertain as to how to inform her of my current status as a chaotic scientist."
'Jack' was quiet for a moment then replied, "Scans indicate that the conditions tonight are perfect for a full test run on your anti gravity vehicle. Results of simulated flights indicate that a night flight will help clear your head."
You smiled at that as you always wanted to take what you called your 'broomstick' out into the open and give it a real shake down. Unknown to you, that wish was about to become true.
"Four hours to launch!" you said, perking up. "I can't wait!"
One hour later, you approached Hayley and gave her a warm hug, surprising her. "I'm very sorry I did not hug you when you first got home." you said, kindly. "I had blamed myself for your absence so when you came home, I was afraid that you might..." you swallowed. "...might push me away, so I didn't try."
"It wasn't you fault." replied Hayley, figuring you were fishing. "I just had to be away for a while." she paused. "I heard you were a bit of a loner while I was gone."
"She's fishing." you thought. then you said, "Because I blamed myself. I didn't want to let the others know, in case I really was to blame."
That became the topic of your dinner conversation that night but both you, Hayley and mom avoided the subject your your secrets or your suspicions. Still both you and Hayley fished around each other, trying to get answers. Neither side got anything of value, frustrating both sides. Near midnight, you sneaked down into the basement and entered your laboratory. and jumped onto your 'broomstick'. It looked more like a slender vacuum cleaner only the small bag along the main body was the main engine and the base was the thrust control with the accelerator and break mounted on the top. Smiling you straddle it then turn on the engine. Immediately, you are hovering over the floor, looking at a tunnel that led to the very wide chimney of the house.
"Scanning for clearance." came Jack's voice. you waited. "Scans indicate all is clear... LAUNCH!"
You hit the accelerator and gave a loud, "YEA- HAW!" as you flew through the tunnel, into and up the large chimney, exiting out into the night sky. Unknown to you, Hayley had launched through the same chimney five minutes before you and was already in flight.
Moments later, Hayley was high above the clouds, staring at the moon. It was full that night but the heavy cloud cover kept everything dark below, so it was safe for her to fly around without being seen.
"Seeing the moon this close always takes my breath away." she said, with a sigh. "I wish I could show John this. Maybe it will open him up and he will talk to me." then, she heard an odd, high pitched sound. She looked around but did not see anything. "What is that? I sounds like a..."
Then, she let out a low gasp as she saw you rise above the clouds, in front of her on something that looked like a flying vacuum cleaner! Normally, she would have laughed at the thought of such a thing. Only, she was looking at you, hovering several hundred feet above the ground on a technological broomstick!
"Hayley loves to stare at the moon." you said aloud to yourself. "I can see why. Seeing it this close really takes your breath away." you sighed. "I wish I could show Hayley this. maybe it will open her up and she will talk to me."
"He's just nervous about talking to me as I am!" thought Hayley. she then loudly cleared her throat, causing you to turn around, startled. Hayley then said, "It seems as if we both have a secret. I'm willing to share, if you are."
How do you reply?
