Hayley felt as if she had somehow been pulled into a science fiction movie, eying the nearly countless of stations with high tech gadgetry, she could only guess did what. It was then she fearfully realized that your powers all came from some insanely advanced science but it was beyond her power to determine how or why.
"You are a what?" she asked, still stunned.
"A chaotic scientist." came the voice of 'Jack'.
Hayley spun around, startled, to see a full holographic image of uncle Jack walking towards her. "Uncle Jack!?!"
"Your uncle Jack is dead, Hayley." said the image. "I am a holographic representative of that man, a computer run mentor, guiding John through his training until he is ready to advance on his own."
"What... What IS chaotic science?" asked Hayley, slightly shaken.
"Chaotic science is made up of literally hundreds of scientific disciplines that have been deemed forbidden due to their highly unstable nature." replied 'Jack'. "It is basically a technological version of magic itself but highly, highly, unstable."
Hayley eyes widened more, her lips trembling. She had heard of a term, used it witch school, referring to a then thought to be an unfounded fear among witches. It was called Pseudo magic. "A science so advanced, It becomes magic!" she whispered. she then, fearfully asked aloud, "Can anyone use this chaotic science?"
"No." replied 'Jack', to her relief. "Only those who have witches in their family can even begin to grasp the basics of this science." he paused. "However, this must remain a secret until John's thirteenth birthday when he will be revealing it himself to the rest of the family."
"I am sorry to question you, Jack." you said, shaking your head, confused. "But magic?"
Hayley smiled. "I am a witch, John." she said. "So is mom. Mel and Hannah will be, upon reaching their thirteenth birthday, but only girls can be witches." she giggled. "Which is why I'm guessing uncle Jack gave you the power of chaotic science, so to keep us with us."
"Latest test results indicate that John's powers of science are equal to your magic, Hayley." said 'Jack'. "Would you be willing to participate in a test to confirm those findings?"
"What kind of test?" asked Hayley, nervous.
'Jack' smiled. "A duel."
You and Hayley smiled at the idea and two round platforms rose from the floor before lighting up. You walked over and stepped up onto one as Hayley took the other, staring each other down.
"The conditions of this duel are simple." said 'Jack'. "Only energy blasts are to be used. The first witch to throw the other off their platform will win the duel."
"The first witch?" asked Hayley. "Isn't he a chaotic scientist?"
'Jack' smiled. "It is easier to say, pseudo witch than chaotic scientist." he said. "Also, it is closer to the definition of who his truly is." he paused. "Another reason to keep this secret until his thirteenth birthday."
Hayley nodded, understanding and the duel began. The two paired off against each other, throwing and deflecting one energy blast after another. For a while, it seemed as if you and she were evenly matched. However, using your science required much concentration to keep stable and you eventually became weaker. Twenty minutes later, Hayley sent forth a strong energy blast and you were thrown from the platform. Only, her blast threw her off balance and she fell as well. By sheer luck alone, you both his the floor at the same time.
"The duel is a draw." declared 'Jack'. "Your powers are near equally matched."
"Near equally?" you asked.
"I am sorry, John." said 'Jack'. "All scans of the duel clearly indicate that Hayley's power is superior to your own by a narrow margin."
You moaned and gave a short pout as Hayley giggled, enjoying her small victory. "Relax, John!" she said, smiling. "I really had to work for that win, I am impressed!"
You looked up at her, then smiled. "I'm glad I was finally able to show someone how far I have come." you said. "It wasn't easy, not being able to tell anyone what I have been doing all this time in isolation. I had to train, to control my new powers so I don't accidentally hurt anyone."
"I know the feeling, bro." said Hayley, smiling. "I hated not being able to tell anyone where I was going or why." she paused. "It looks like you and I both spent a lot of time isolated from the family, that kind of makes a bond."
"Yeah, it does." you said. you turned to her, hopeful. "Will you keep my secret until my birthday?"
Hayley looked at you hesitant. "I kind of promised mom to try to find out why you had been acting so strangely for the past year." she said. "What should I tell her?"
You thought a moment then smiled. "Tell her the truth, Hayley." you said. "But reveal nothing except that I had promised you to tell everyone everything on my birthday."
"If she presses for more?" asked Hayley.
You chuckled. "Tell her to to take a night flight on her broomstick tomorrow. I should be ready to fly my anti gravity vehicle again by then." you smiled. "With a few modifications, of course."
Hayley nodded, having an idea what you meant. but she was not sure if it was a wise idea. She then asked where she could find the exit. You smiled before waving your hand at her. There was a flash and Hayley suddenly found herself standing in the living room, surprised. Only, you forgot to scan for clearance first and she found herself facing an equally surprised mom.
"Okay, young lady!" scolded mom. "Teleportation is a bit advanced for you. Have you been studying unrestricted?"
Hayley shook her head, not wanting to lie to her mother. "I haven't, mom." she said, with a sigh. "John has."
Mom's face turned ashen white as she looked at Hayley, darkly surprised. "What!?!"
