In her island fortress of Syrup Castle, the leader of the Black Sugar Pirates sat upon her throne of pilfered gold, looking like the cat that ate the canary. Life had been good for her, especially since she'd conned the Bottomless Coin Sack from Wario. The pirate queen lived the high life from that point on, rebuilding her old digs three times as large and a million times as luxurious. One could say that she never wanted for anything, but the problem with Captain Syrup was that she always wanted more, and in that respect she was much like Wario. The similarity stopped there, however. Syrup was a cunning foe, as beautiful as she was devious. Wario was... Wario.
She grinned as she thought of Wario. She liked the crude, greedy man, but she liked his treasure more. Still, she hoped he wasn't TOO sore about her swiping the Bottomless Coin Sack. He'd proven to give as good as he'd got in the past, and the last thing Syrup wanted was him thrashing through Kitchen Island hellbent on taking his treasure back with interest.
At that moment, one of her Goom henchmen came waddling in, bearing a huge wrapped gift. The red-haired rogue perked up immediately. "What's this, henchman? Something from an admirer?" she inquired.
The Goom set down the box in front of her. "Appears to be from that purple-pants guy you're always messing with, Captain!"
A present? From Wario? So soon after she'd made a fool of him and stolen his treasure? Best to let the expendable henchman open it, just in case it proved to be a bomb or some other nasty surprise. "Open it, henchman."
The Goom did as he was bidden. The inside of the box was a mess of dunnage, wads of paper overflowing onto the floor. The hapless swabbie dove in, rustling around for a few minutes before extricating himself with a tiny box and a letter. "Found it, Captain! Apologies for the delay!"
"Don't just stand there, bring it here!" Wario's lamentable lack of eco-friendly packaging technique was the last thing on Syrup's mind as the Goom trundled over, handing the contents of the giftbox over. Her eyes scanned over the paper as she read aloud.
"Dear Syrup; I'm really sick of you stealing my stuff all the time! Don't get too comfortable just laying around while others do the work, or you'll really regret it! But to show that I'm not TOO angry with you, here's a present. I think it'll really bring us closer together. Have a rotten day, Wario."
'...Interesting. I wonder what it is." The nautical nymph opened the small box, revealing a golden band studded with precious stones. The ring was on her finger five seconds after she opened the box. "How wonderful! I'll have to steal from him more often!"
Just then, Syrup...
