Pam looks away, shame coloring her eyes. "I... I know that for as long as I kept track of them, the other two stayed switched. As for fixing it... they wouldn't give me the chance to try to find something. Mom wanted to try, but she needed one of them as an example, and they wouldn't go."
"I don't understand that. For a chance to fix it..."
She stays silent for a long pause, then finally speaks in a broken whisper.
"I... it's my fault. I didn't tell either of them about Mom right away. I even acted like I didn't know what caused it at first. So they didn't trust me at all by that point." She purses her lips and adds, "I guess I've grown up a little since then."
After some silence, I say, "I don't know what to think about this, but I appreciate you telling me up front."
She smiles sadly. "So, are you going to go see my mother with me?"
"She's a witch too?"
"Not as good as Grandma. Being half-Gypsy, Gypsy magic doesn't work as well for her. I'm a quarter, so I can't do mch more than give people bad luck and mess with the odds in gambling games."
I think for a bit, then shrug. "I don't know that I have any choice."
