You watched from your upstairs bedroom window as your parents chatted with your former high school friend's mother. You were very careful however, not to be visible to her. The last thing you wanted was for this woman to know you were still living at home. Of course, it wasn't unlikely that your parents would bring it up in their conversation anyway as if it were no big deal. Still, the least you could do was preserve the idea in your head that no one but your parents and yourself knew your current living situation.
All your friends had gone off to college. Some of them were already kickstarting their careers. You had tried that, but your own insecurities and fear of failure led you down a dark rabbit hole and back to your parents house. No college degree, no job training, no career. Your mother treated it as if you were experiencing a slight set back and acted as if you'd be back on your feet at any given moment. Your father however did not hold back his disappointment. He kept reminding you that your situation at home was temporary and that you WOULD be leaving after a certain amount of time had left, whether you had your shit together or not. The truth was, you had absolutely no idea which direction you were going to take in your life. The future terrified you.
An abrupt knock at the door pulled you away from your self pitying thoughts. How strange, you thought. Could my parents be done talking already? You took a brief glance out the window. Your parents were still chatting away with your former friend's mother. Who could be at my door then? You wondered.
You quickly smoothed your hair, and made sure you did not look like a basement dweller and walked over to your bedroom door. When you opened it however, there was no one on the other side. Just an empty space and the stairs a few feet away. You shut the door, wondering if you were imagining things when the knocking sounded you again, startling you. This time you realized the knocking was not coming from your bedroom door. It was coming from your closet!
