Within two minutes Liz was in the office. "I can't believe Steven exploded. He was my best friend." She felt a bit lost without him around to order about.
Elizabeth tried to put a positive spin on the situation. "I've read about spontaneous human combustion. It's just one of those strange things that happens to people. Don't get too sentimental about it Liz."
"I suppose."
"I wouldn't even be surprised if he was responsible for it himself . He was giving me some funny looks and he kept staring at my chest."
Liz couldn't really see the connection. She wasn't entirely sure what Elizabeth was implying as she looked at the office floor. "He didn't even leave a scorch mark." Liz looked towards Elizabeth. "Do you think we should call the police?"
"Hmm, that would be pretty disruptive and as you can see there isn't any evidence. They probably wouldn't even believe me anyway. We have to move on. We are still short staffed. We'll need to find someone to fill his position."
A look of horror filled Liz's face. "I'm sorry Elizabeth but I think you are being a bit heartless. For no apparent reason, one of our most valued employees has just exploded and you are talking about replacing him straight away."
Elizabeth's expression became more sympathetic. "Oh goodness, you are absolutely right poppet. I don't know what came over me."
Liz was relieved Elizabeth was aware of her lack of compassion.
Elizabeth looked into Liz's eyes. "We can't just replace him like nothing happened. The other staff will be upset."
"Of course they will," Liz said.
"Better wait till the end of shift, when everyone has gone home, before you empty his locker out."
