As the girls finished eating their lunches, the peaceful sounds of the outdoors were suddenly disrupted by the loud hum of engines and the rolling of tyres. The girls looked up just as what looked like a convoy of vehicles raced along the road and screeched to a halt just outside the school.
"What's going on?" Tiffany asked, moving forward to get a closer look.
"Looks like...the army?" Amanda said in a confused tone.
The three girls exchanged confused looks. Amber watched as a least a dozen dark green trucks pulled up outside the school, blocking off the exit. The truck doors slid open and soldiers began to climb out. It was the army, but what were they doing here?
"This doesn't look good," Amanda said. "Maybe there's been a bomb threat or something?"
The soldiers were arming themselves now, and moving into positions around the school. As they advanced towards the front entrance, the girls started to back away, only for the Principal to burst from the doors behind them. They dodged out of his way as he charged up to the soldiers.
"What the hell is going on here?" The Principal shouted. "Nobody told me anything about this!"
The soldiers stepped aside suddenly as a young, pale man in a suit moved towards the Principal and extended a gloved hand. Amber, Tiffany and Amanda moved in for a closer look, trying to overhear what was being said.
"Principal, allow me to introduce myself, my name is Martin and I serve as head of operations for Shadow-Tech. I'm afraid your school has been the site of an outbreak," the pale man said. "In accordance with our containment procedures, you are to consider your school and all the pupils inside in a state of quarantine."
"What?!" The Principal gasped. "What kind of outbreak? Is this something to do with that virus on the news?"
The pale man smiled and gave a quiet laugh. "Principal, I'm afraid I can't discuss that with you at this time. Now, if you would like to return to your office, we can start securing the building. Advise your students that they will be staying in their classrooms until further notice."
"But, but..." The Principal stuttered, trying to protest. Instead, two soldiers grabbed him by the arms and started dragging him back inside.
"Woah..." Amber gasped as the Principal was dragged past them.
Another two soldiers approached the trio of girls and regarded Amanda with curiosity. One of them turned to face the pale man. "Sir...I think this one might be infected, do you want me to isolate?"
The pale man stepped forward and looked Amanda over, then shook his head. "No, don't bother. Just escort them inside and begin the lockdown."
"Yes sir."
"For your information I'm not infected with anything!" Amanda pouted.
Before she could protest further, the soldiers moved the girls back inside, and began slammed the doors shut. Amber watched, confused, as they began to chain the doors shut. What that virus Amanda mentioned real? And just who in the school was infected? Whatever the truth was, it looked like they were stuck here for now.
