Chapter #4

The object that fell to earth.

    by: Unknown
Flame was giddy with excitement. He knew he shouldn't be; he needed his full attention on the task at hand. But how was that possible? Flame was with his childhood hero! He still struggled to believe that the legendary purple dragon was flying next to him.

The young fire drake threw a quick glance to the older dragon flying next to him. Master Spyro was everything, and more, that they described him to be: burly, tall, powerful, and, of course, a deep purple.

Lady Cynder was there, too. Flame was memorized by how her curvy, black body glided effortlessly through the air. She was so attractive. Flame sighed inwardly. He knew that Cynder would never be his.

It was well known, although the red drake tried to hide, by Flame's fellow students at the Academy that he had a crush on the Savior of The Skies. He was teased often because of it, but Flame didn't blame them; Lady Cynder had to be at least two or three decades his senior!

But still, Flame was truly in the presence of greatness. He was chosen personally by the Guardians to go on this patrol with Spyro and Cynder. Flame wasn't sure why. He guessed it was because he held the strongest chance to become the next Fire Guardian.

It was an important task for important people, Flame concluded, which made him swell with pride. The said task was an investigation about a mysterious object that fell from the sky one nights ago. Everyone knew about it. It was hard not to.

Flame could still remember being woken up by a loud and eerie rumble in the middle of the night, and then he was startled greatly when a loud boom echoed throughout the whole Valley of Avalar.

Those who were awake those hours of the night reported seeing a ball of green fire streak through the dark sky, crashing somewhere behind a large hill thirty miles away from Warfang. It alarmed the residence of the valley, and it was strongly requested to the Guardians to investigate this strange occurrence.

And so they sent Flame, Master Spyro, and Lady Cynder to find whatever crashed into Earth last night. Along came ten dragon knights for extra protection. Though Flame highly doubt that would have been necessary; Spyro and Cynder was without a shadow of a doubt the most powerful beings in Avalar, perhaps even the world.

Flame expected professional silence to rule this whole entire flight, but to his surprise Spyro and Cynder were constantly chatting with one another, and their conversations weren't of anything serious but mundane situations that any being in the Avalar would suffer. Flame was really beginning to see them in another light.

What surprised him even more was when they began to chat with him.

"So, kid, I heard that you're the next in line to become the the new Fire Guardian, isn't that true?" Master Spyro asked with his thick voice. He seemed genuinely interested.

"I-I guess it is," Flame said with a nod.

It felt good to admit his position, but then Flame saw, to his alarm, Master Spyro's eyes grow sad. Why was he sad? Flame had heard from his history lessons that the Fire Guardian Ignitus was ones the purple dragon's mentor, and that he died during the great war against the darkness.

The stories tell that he and Master Spyro were close. Perhaps that was the reason why he seemed so somber. But like the sun appearing behind a dark cloud, the purple dragon brightened again, cracking a smile.

"Well, young one, the best of luck to you," he said, "I think you'll make an excellent Gaurdian."

"You really think so?" Flame asked, astonished.

"Of course we do," the Savior of The Skies said, dropping alongside them, and the red drake felt his heart rate speed up.

Her voice was sharp, even though she was speaking kindly. Flame really didn't want to be on her bad side.

"We've been hearing quite a few tales from you, little one," Lady Cynder continued.

Flame felt his face heat up by being called "little one". When it came to size, Flame was a little shorter than most dragons his age. He took it up as an insult to be referred in any way of being small.

But Flame forgave her and said nothing, mainly because he knew that she probably didn't know and that his crush on her prevented him from getting angry at Cynder.

"Yes," Spyro said suddenly next to him, "top of your class, and clever too."

Flame blushed a bit from all the praise. They continued to talk merrily for a while, but when they were close to the crash site they party grew silent, the seriousness of the task settling in.

When the came to the hill, they flapped their wings a few times to gain altitude, and behind the hill was...
