We get to see Kovu grow from adorable cub to strong adult during the film, so why not take it further.

Idea One: Zira, determined to strike Simba while he is weak and preoccupied with Kiara, finds a way to make Kovu a threat before he expects it.

Idea Two: After Simba passes away peacefully, at a ripe old age, Kovu is scared of becoming King, and pleads to the Great Kings for help.
