The woman takes you to meet your new husband. As you walk in 'he' looks up. Again, you can tell this is a female in male clothing, but the short hair cut and the fact that 'he' had whiskers made it hard to tell over all. The attendant smiled and said, "Julie, this is your husband Walter. Walter, meet your wife, Julie."
You feel embarrassed as you curtsey the way you were coached. He took you hand and said, "I am sure we will get along wonderfully."
As part of the whole deal, you were taken before a judge and formally married with your new names! This left you wondering if you were now legally married outside of this town or not? In any case, it did have the effect of making you feel truly married to 'Walt'.
You were then taken back to your children, then to a car that you would have called a 'classic' but looked new! It was made clear that your husband had to drive. When you protested, it was pointed out to you that you did not have a driver's license now!
You followed someone to your new home. Once there, some rules were explained to all of you, and they revealed that some of the people you met would be observers. You would not know who they were, but if they detected any problems, you would be given additional training for small things, or fined and thrown out for others!
For you that meant handling all of the cooking, cleaning, wash, dishes and other 'domestic' duties expected of a wife. Including shopping and hostessing and whatever else was needed as a woman in the 50's. You were not sure how this was going to work for real.
