Vanessa tapped the "Apply" button and waited. She didn't feel any different. She struck a pose that she had seen on one of Laura's anime posters once, willing herself to transform. Nothing happened. She was about to look at the app again, when she heard footsteps coming from outside the room. Vanessa placed the phone back down just in time to avoid being seen by Laura as she came back into the room.
Laura looked--different, somehow. It was hard to say why. She looked more tired than normal, but also more confident. Her posture was better and it seemed less like she was actively trying to not be noticed.
"Oh. Hey, Vanessa," she said. "What're you doing in my room?"
Vanessa shrugged. "Just seeing if you were around. Greg and me were gonna head to the beach. Wanna come?"
Laura shook her head. "I'm gonna take a nap. Had a rough night at my job yesterday."
"Your job?" Vanessa furrowed her brow. Laura never had a job before. At least, not one that Vanessa knew of.
"Yeah," said Laura, not quite registering the source of Vanessa's confusion. "Well, maybe not 'rough,' but it was a long night. I won't bore you with the details." Vanessa watched as Laura walked over to her bed, flopped down onto the mattress, and closed her eyes. "Anyway, you go have fun with Greg."
Vanessa paused, then almost gasped. She could remember now. Last night on the news, she had seen Wyld Fyre chasing down a group of men who'd robbed a liquor store. The chase lasted--Vanessa shook her head. What was she talking about? She was supposed to be Wyld Fyre, not--
Vanessa looked down at the phone, and noticed that a notification on Laura's phone.
"Transformation to user Laura complete. Historical addition of meta-human ability successful. Thank you for using the Alterations app."
"Oh," Laura said. She half expected to hear Laura respond, but evidently she was completely unconscious by now.
