Brendan's whole body was shuddering, and he had some vial stabbed into his right calf. The vial was mostly empty, only a couple drops had stayed inside. They were orange, almost glowing. Whatever it was was clearly not helping Brendan, so I rushed over to help.
My first thought was this was some sort of snake venom, due to the bright color. I knew if there was some venom left, it could be used to identify the venom and/or make an antidote. So I rushed over and carefully removed the vial, making sure those last few drops didn't spill out. I then called 911, telling them all I knew. After a few tense minutes, an ambulance could be heard outside the dorm rooms.
I followed Brendan to the hospital, where I had to wait in a lobby while they checked on him. I remember how... stale the air was. How I was impressed with how many shades of white could be fit in the one space. It was a surreal experience, waiting to see how Brendan was doing. Sure, I had to talk to doctors and I had a phone I could use but all I really remember is waiting, waiting for what felt like days. In reality, it was about two hours before I was updated on Brendan's status.
A doctor came up to me and introduced himself. Specifically, Dr. Lowers, PhD in anthro-anatomy, basically a general physician who specializes exclusively on anthros. A very uncommon field, I was surprised someone like him would be out in a small town like Whitewater. After the introductions, he asked me to walk with him to Brendan's room.
"So, Bryan, you said this vial, the one in Brendan's right calf, had a few drops of liquid in it when you arrived, yes?"
"Yeah, why?"
"We had some, uh, scientists, look into the vial. When it arrived, there was no liquid. It was completely empty."
"That's, that's impossible! I handed the vial to the paramedics myself, and there was liquid in there. Only a few drops, like I said earlier, but still."
"Well, there weren't any when it arrived for analysis. And the vial left no traces we can use to determine what was injected into Brendan."
"Is Brendan in trouble then, without that sample?"
"I was getting to that. We need to know because...
