Chapter #4

Crossing the bridge

by: evil dude Author IconMail Icon
The bridge looked sturdy enough, but getting past the wreckage would be a bit difficult with the gun in his hand. Still, Jack knew a safe bet when he saw it and quietly walked up with his new toy ready to fire. The place looked pretty bad with blood smears and broken glass everywhere, though it at least looked like a good number of people got away safely.

Up ahead was an abandoned cargo truck filled with snack cakes visible through the partially opened back door. Jack had found some rations and a little water back at the military base but knew he'd need food more than he needed extra ammo. After removing some of his spare bullets he stuffed some of the snack cakes into his pocket and climbed up onto the top of a nearby RV to get onto the roof of the truck.

Off in the distance he could see Ruststone further up the road as well as what appeared to be a wrecked military helicopter crashed at the foot of a small hill. While Jack was planning his escape back to the city something else caught his eye... movement near the front of the bridge. He walked over to the edge of the truck to get a better look but was horrified at what he saw.

A crashed city bus had suffered a nasty wreck that had sent the front end off the bridge and wedged the back end into what could only be described as a vehicle sandwich. This left Jack very little room to cross the bridge and get past the zombies that were now piling out of the crashed vehicles up ahead.

For a brief moment Jack considered turning back only to see the way he came now cut off by a large horde of zombies, several of which had been obscured by a large semi truck. "Shit, no way they won't see me if I go back that way." he cursed as he walked back to the front of the truck and jumped down onto the hood.

The traffic jam in front of him was bad enough that he might be able to just get across by hopping from roof to roof. "Here goes." Jack said confidently as he leaped from the hood of the truck onto a van and then to the side of an overturned truck much like the one he had just come from. In minutes he was just a few feet above a sea of zombies and about three fourths of the way across the bridge, the only obstacle left was the bus.

From the looks of things Jack had only 3 options: He could jump down and try to move past the end of the bus still on the bridge and climb up the vehicles to the other side, he could try to send the bus the rest of the way off the bridge or he could try to make the long jump from where he was standing and hope he'd be able to grab onto the bus and pull himself up.

None of the options seemed great but he was out of options at this point...
