Chapter #7

The personal chef of Princess Celestia!

    by: Unknown
The calming air the decorative trees on both sides of the entry road breathed , the scent of newly bloomed flowers in the nearby Sculpture Garden, the sound of the Royal Guards trotting along the grounds...all of these things thrilled Tom as he made his way to Canterlot Castle, the seat of government for the Royal Diarchy of Equestria, the official residence of the Princess Celestia and Luna, and most importantly his new workplace and home.

The palace was so awesome and significant that it made the rest of Canterlot look like a wooden shanty town. The palace of polished white marble and ivory towers went up so high it looked as if it was trying to pierce the sky. Tom smiled and quickened his pace towards the castle proper.

The road to this new Canterlot life had not been an easy one. Cooking has always been Tom’s number one passion, and paid for his skill and experience with his own sweat and tears. Ever since he was a little kid, he was enamored by the high life of Canterlot, and he dreamed of getting to cook for the Royal Princesses. Top of his class at Culinary School, praised in magazines and newspapers for his innovative recipes and approach to cooking, he had won the attention of not only Canterlot’s high society, but Celestia and Luna themselves. It was them that asked for Tom to be the head chef, and he graciously accepted. His hard work had finally paid off. He had gotten his dream job.

Tom had arrived at the large, wooden doors of the main Castle entrance. Even the ornate, decorated wood looked like it could pay off his student debt. The doors themselves were guarded by two guards to each side, dressed in golden, roman styled armor that made room for their gigantic, bulbous stomachs that grazed onto the ground heavily. He stopped in front of one if the guards, but had to cough to get his attention. The guard looked down past the horizon of his stomach and move back a little to see him better.

“Identification, please.” The guard ordered in a no nonsense manner, which was to be expected from his line of work. Tom fished out his paperwork and handed it to the guard, who had to squint to read the tiny print properly.

“...wait a second, are you really the new head chef?” The guard looked over the papers again in astonishment, not actually believing the official stamp at the bottom by Celestia herself.

“Uh, yeah, thats me! Hehe…” Tom chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. His forced smile faded as the guard began to glare daggers at him.

“You’re not what I was expecting…” the guard growled in a low voice, almost sounding angry.

“O-o-oh…” Tom felt like he shrank under the harsh stare of the Royal Guard. “Were you expecting...is it because I’m a human?”

“What?” The guard’s threatening stare was halted in it’s tracks. “N-no! I just thought that all chefs dressed in those funny white outfits and stuff!”.

“Oh! I’m sorry! I just thought that...it doesn't matter, I shouldn't have judged.” Tom felt his initial fear from the guard now swell up with embarrassment. He hadn't even stepped in the castle yet, and things were already starting on a bad foot. He had heard rumors about ponies being extremely bigoted towards human because they felt superior to them in every way. Probably should have left those rumors at home.

“Y-yeah, uh...here’s your papers…” The guard quickly gave Tom’s papers back to him and produced a key practically out of thin air. That armor didn’t look like it had any pockets. The key went into the castle lock and opened the massive doors for Tom. More than eager to leave that awkward scene behind, he race-walked into the castle as the doors shut behind him.

The inside of Canterlot Castle was even more decadent and beautiful than the outside. Beautiful tapestries and stained glass windows lined the walls, while priceless artifacts were placed on top of ornate pedestals. Tom felt that just being in the room brought down the face value of everything by a large margin.

Tom did not exactly know where to go from there as he stranded in the foyer of the Castle. The instructions that was given to him when he got the job was to ‘head inside and wait’. Tom wondered if someone put a lot of effort into making that message as vague as possible. Soon however, a voice called out for him.

“Welcome to Canterlot Castle, Thomas Knox~”. He looked up to the top of the foyer stairwell to see who was calling him, to find...
