"Sorry Maria, but I don't think the Disney dresses will fit me anymore." I thought she had quite a collection because every time I took my little brother to a fancy dress she was invited to as well, she was always dressed up as Belle, or Snow White, or Pocahontas...
"We've got tones of clothes in the attic," Maria replied, "Facepaint too!" she added gleefully. I glanced over at the clock. Huh- two hours before she had to go to bed. Jeez it was earlier than I'd thought. Yeah sure, why not? The film on TV was boring and I had two days before I needed to hand in my essay. That was plenty of time.
"Alright, I'll play." Maria gave a whoop of excitement as I turned off the TV and pushed myself out of the comfy chair.
She led me up to the dimly lit attic that plenty of boxes had collected up in over the years. Maria led me over to an ornate wooden chest that she struggled to open up. Inside were a collection of old dresses, clothes and accessories. The light caught on an antique mirror to the side covered in cobwebs that looked like they were brushed away every so often.
"So," I said to Maria, "What do you want to dress up as?"
The little girl thought for a second. Then, because she'd just remembered what her favorite thing was, she beamed, "Let's be princesses."
Don't get me wrong, princesses are fine and great to dress up as, but once you've reached a certain age, or are a tom-boy who wouldn't be. Seen dead in a skirt, or both like me, they're overrated.
