Chapter #4

Kindly

    by: Unknown
You have no idea how this happened.

You were playing football ("playing" was generous) with your friends Sam and Charles, when suddenly you felt something in your stomach. You hunched forward, hearing the football hit the grass behind you as you held your stomach in your hands. A few seconds go by, and as you lurch forward you can hear your friends’ stomps get louder as they come to check on you. Their shadows hover over your frame as you feel Charles’s hand on your shoulder, shaking you.

“You okay?” He asks, as you see his white converses fidgeting in the grass below you. You open your mouth to speak, but no sounds come out. Your throat feels itchy, as something tickles the inner linings of your esophagus, you beginning to feel your joints pop. As if they were…stretching.

“Dude, I don’t think he’s gonna make it,” Sam said, shoving his hands in his pockets.

“Stop being so dramatic,” Charles snaps, then turns to you.

You cough. The olive brown skinned boy orders the taller one to get your inhaler, and as your eyelids got heavier you watched the pale boy trudge his feet to get you your medicine. Charles kneels in front of you, his right arm slugged around your back as you slowly unfurl yourself.

“You okay now?” He asks again, his voice soft.

You offer him a weak smile, “I told you I couldn’t play football.”

He pushes you lightly, “You doofus!” But his smile betrays his words as Sam comes back with your blue inhaler. Sam grins.

“Newsflash, lovebirds! I’ve got the inhaler, so you can all stop panicking now.”

Charles grinned as he pushed himself up, trying to face Sam eye to eye. It’s comical, how short the boy is compared to Sam. His eyes are in level with Sam’s neck, which bends as the taller boy looks on Sam. At 6’2, the seventeen year old technically towered over Charles, who was (although 7 inches shorter) the older out of the two. However, what Charles lacked in height he made up for in masculinity, and Sam soon backed down. You smirked to yourself, wondering how you even got in this friend group to begin with. While you were dazed, Sam threw your inhaler to your chest, smirking.

“Better catch your breath before you lose it again, lover boy,” he remarked.

You rolled your eyes, “You’re just jealous that all your crushes like me better.”

His eyes twitched at the insult, but he recovered, saying, “I guess.”

Suddenly, your head started throbbing as you crumpled to the ground, your knees hitting the wet grass as you clutched it with your right hand. Sam’s face fell, and as you began to spaz, you threw your inhaler on the ground. Your joints were popping again, and you were writhing in pain as an intense heat came over you. It was hot, too hot – you were sweating. As you groaned, you watched as your body swelled in different sections – first your hands, then your feet, your legs, arms, and even head – before all returning back to normal. You took a breather, closing your eyes. It was over, you thought. But before you could open your eyes again the pain became even MORE intense, the heat at its peak for a flash of a second…and then it was over. You suddenly felt stretched, sprung – and for a couple moments after you felt your body pinching itself in various places…as if sculpting you, almost.

You open your eyes and…
