"Susan is going to be your replacement while you're assisting me down here."

"But sir," Mark said, obviously confused. "She couldn't possibly. No disrespect Susan, but I've been writing code for years. If you gave me a month to train her on everything I'm doing, I suppose she could take over from me, but..."

"Oh, that won't be an issue. Here, let's get this started and it will all make sense. Susan, why don't you have a seat over there in the red chair, the one marked Locus 2. Mark, you're going to sit in the chair marked Locus 1, the green one."

As the two took their seats, Alan Summers bustled around each of them, connecting an array of wires to various parts of their bodies and a helm covered with wires sat over each of their heads. When he was done, Alan took his place at a central console and spent several minutes entering commands. Finally, Summers threw a switch sending a wave of current over both subjects.

Mark's vision went dark, or maybe it was the room itself going black... when light returned:
