I could go with you

"I wish I could go with you," Dan said.

"Then why don't you?" Sam asked, as though it were no big deal.

Dan blinked. "What?"

Sam shrugged. "If you want to come, then come." She got up and called out to her mother. "Hey, Mom? Is it okay if Dan comes with us?"

"Sure!" her mother called back. "That sounds fine."

"Huh," he said, still not entirely to terms with the situation. "Well, even if your mom says okay, my mom sure won't."

A brief phone call proved him wrong. "Sure, you can go," Dan's mother told him. "You'll be back in a week? Two weeks? Ah, doesn't matter, just have fun, sweety!"

And with that, Dan was joining his best friend on a family vacation. But as soon as they got into the car, he found out something was wrong.
