Since the floor was rather dirty, Tom decided to just throw the slice away. There were plenty of other slices he could use, so losing one wasn't so bad. So, without ever seeing the tiny figure holding on to the slice of meat he was holding, he started walking over to the trash can.
George wasn't sure what was happening at first. For a second, he was hopeful that Tom saw him, but that changed as Tom looked completely bored. His expression wasn't one of realization. He didn't notice anything that really stood out. Then he looked away from the meat and started moving.
George was trying to figure out where he was being taken until Tom stopped right in front of the trash can. George immediately knew what was happening and it made him even more frantic than before. There was no way out. He'd either have to jump off and risk getting killed or severely injured, or stay there and end up in the trash.
Desperately, he tried to get Tom's attention again, "Tom, wait! I'm right here! Please!" But Tom couldn't hear him and George was completely powerless as he opened the lid of the trash can and prepared to throw the slice inside.
