Provert decided it would be helpful to interview the couple immediately after their surgery.
Anne let him into the passenger side of the van, then got behind the wheel. In the back, the two burly men had strapped Grant and Tiffany to stretchers. The drive to the clinic was uneventful, as the cold night had kept traffic to a minimum. Provert only wished he'd brought warmer clothing.
Grant and Tiffany were removed from the van and brought in through the back door of the clinic. The place was deserted except for Hawke, who scowled when he saw Provert coming through the automatic sliding doors.
"I don't need your supervision."
"Oh, shut up. Here," he practically threw the legal documents the couple had signed. "Everything should be in order. How long will this take?"
"Most of the night," Hawke said. "The woman's procedure is fairly easy, but the man's will take longer."
"Better get started then. And I want to watch."
"Fine. But keep your mouth shut."
Forty five minutes later, the couple was sedated (Grant had almost regained consciousness) and placed on separate operating tables. Anne had left to dispose of their identification, while the two men were drinking coffee in the waiting room.
Before he became a therapist, Provert had attended one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country. Hawke had been one of his classmates, a strikingly handsome, very brash young man who unfortunately developed rather exotic sexual tastes. While he had left before obtaining his degree, Provert kept an eye on Hawke over the years, knowing it was only a matter of time before his former colleague's tastes would get him into trouble. The night Hawke had killed the prostitute, Provert had been there to help hide the body, but he had kept the murder weapon, fingerprints intact, as well as other evidence. More than enough to put Hawke in jail, should he ever get out of line.
"There is no statute of limitations on murder," Provert liked to remind him.
Hawke was now one of the most famous plastic surgeons around, especially for sexual reassignment surgery. That wasn't what he was going to do for Grant, though...not quite, anyway.
Indeed, the procedures Provert had planned for both of them made SRS seem positively mundane.
The first thing to be done was to inject both Tiffany and Grant with special implants. These state-of-the-art devices, which could be adjusted remotely through a wireless signal, would both monitor their endocrine levels and excrete various hormones and chemicals according to templates Provert had devised. The implants were undetectable under the skin and neither Tiffany nor Grant knew they were going to receive one. Grant's implant would produce androgen blockers, squelching the effects of testosterone, as well as massive amounts of female hormones. The idea was to bring him around to the hormonal state (and produce the same secondary sex characteristics) of a teenage girl.
But there was something else in the cocktail of drugs he would receive, an antidepressant known for slowing mental function. Not only would it keep his emotional state in check, it would also make it harder for him to think, and especially to verbalize his thoughts.
Tiffany's cocktail was different. She would also receive a boost of female hormones, designed to mimic the hormonal state of a woman who had just given birth. Those hormones, plus a few additional drugs, would be sufficient to induce lactation. Another drug would slow her metabolism, leading to rapid weight gain.
In just a few minutes, Hawke had implanted both devices and calibrated them using a portable computer. The receivers on the devices were short range, so Julia or Anne would be the ones to make changes to the programming, should any be necessary.
