Chapter #4

Journey Begins

    by: Smuxray Author IconMail Icon
You let out the nervous breath you'd been holding in as another groan escapes your stomach. You can't help but chuckle at yourself, resting one of your webbed paws on your slim midsection. Today is the day you'd finally decided to leave your home in search of answers, and with all the anxiety going on in your mind you probably haven't eaten as much as you should have. That's alright, there will be plenty of berries along the way as you leave the forest. On that note, you realize that you have no idea which would be the best direction to go, seeing as you've lived your whole life in this dense collection of trees.

Your old village isn't far from here, a gathering of humble tree-homes which is now deserted. You would like to see it again, but many ferals tend to inhabit that area, so in the interest of your own survival it's best to avoid it. Your head swivels to look across the small lake. In that direction is one of your training spots, but beyond that is an utter mystery to you... So with your mind made up, you take a graceful leap into the clear water, hardly even making a splash as your amphibian body simply slides in. For a water-type like you, taking occasional swims is actually important. You need to stay hydrated to keep your energy up, and to allow the use of your water-type techniques- without them you would be much more vulnerable. However, you can only carry so much water in your body, so you decide it would be best to avoid wasting it on attacks unless it's absolutely necessary.

You emerge on the opposite shore of the lake, the cool water spilling off of your body as you step out of the shallows. It feels so nice, you almost wish you could stay. This would be a good final memory of your birthplace. Who knows, you might even return someday. But something told you that day would be a long, long time in coming...

Your eyes scan the treeline and find a low branch. You take a running leap, grabbing onto the branch with both hands, and swing yourself up, gliding up into the tree feet-first before rotating upright to land safely on an upper branch. With the forest as dense as it was, using the treetops was simply the safest and easiest way to travel, for someone capable of doing so. You nimbly crawl along the branches, taking short leaps between trees, slowly working your way into the upper canopy. The leaves surrounding your view become thinner, until eventually you are perched upon a high branch in one of the tallest trees, giving you a clear view across the leafy roofing of the forest.

The verdant green stretches as far as the eye can see, although you can make out mountains far off in the distance. A gust of wind causes the wood around you to creak and shudder, and your pink scarf flaps against your back. Many do not realize it, but this is actually your tongue- although its uses are far different than the same appendage of other creatures. The unusual size and length originally developed as a means to ensnare and devour prey, although nowadays this usage is almost completely forgotten. Instead Greninja wear them like cloaks or capes, occasionally using them in combat as a fifth limb to strike their foes. You eat berries like everyone else, by slipping them under the scarf into your mouth, which remains hidden as a consequence of the pink appendage always being wrapped around.

You begin to descend the trees, reminded of your hunger. From the lower branches you will be able to see or smell any berries near the ground. It only takes a few more minutes of tree-walking until one such tasty smell wafts up to your nose, and cautiously you begin to slip down to lower branches. You can see a whole batch of blue, roundish fruits hanging from nearby bushes. Oran berries, what else? From your low perch, you visually scan the clearing several times before dropping down silently. You approach the bushes and pluck a berry, closing your eyes as you breathe in the flavorful scent.

Your eyes shoot open and your head swivels to look behind you. Crouching a few yards away is a dark, wiry female eyeing you up. She has long, sharp claws and red featherlike adornments in various places around her body. A Weavile. She seems a bit surprised, staring up at you with those violet-colored eyes... exactly like the eyes of those monsters who devoured your village. The berry you picked drops to the ground as she pounces you. You put your guard up just fast enough to pivot around, redirecting the force as she tackles you to throw her off to the side, those nasty claws narrowly missing your face. She quickly picks herself up and emits a low growl as you prepare yourself for a fight...

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. Wait for her to pounce again

*Noteb*
2. Make the first strike!

*Noteb*
3. Reader's Choice

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
