Chapter #5The Birth of Bane Girl by: Fox Gotham was always a cesspool of criminal activity, yet one brave individual was determined to not let it overwhelm her. Batgirl sailed through the cool brisk winter air before perching herself atop a rooftop in the city docks. At the moment she was alone, given that both the dark knight and boy wonder were away with duties that took them both far and away from the city they called home, thus leaving Barbara on her own with Alfred Pennyworth as her sole radio contact. Of course, there was Nightwing but who knew what he was doing these days, if he was even in town to begin with.
Regardless, in the past few days she had been following up on a set of particular heists that she figured, through her own skills of deduction, were all seemingly connected with one another. It was just a matter of figuring out who was the mastermind behind it. After all, Gotham city certainly wasn't shorthanded when it came to the criminally corrupted, even without having sided herself with the dark knight. Her own father could have told her that!
Back to the investigation at hand, the highly dangerous and addictive chemical, Venom, was for whatever reason being shipped into the city by an outside source one that she deduced was the muscle monster himself, Bane. Because of how long his body had been exposed to the hyper steroid-like substance the masked man was practically addicted to it, most likely in need of it even when he wasn't breaking people's faces into dust. The numerous venom arrivals were no doubt a red flag that Bane was on his way back to Gotham, but someone out there was surprisingly beating him to the punch and, unfortunately for her, there was a lot of suspects that could easily come to mind.
Sneaking into the warehouse through a nearby air duct, Batgirl crawled her way through the metal passageway, following the sounds of a few male voices. The men were no doubt the ones sent to pick up the venom supply. She paused as she watched silently through a vent's small opening. Doing so, she could make out the trio of men, one of which was busy ripping the cover of a tightly sealed crate.
"Sweet! Boss was right! Looks like the stuff got here right on time."
"Shut up man, he'll bust our heads if we don't get this here crap back to him ASAP. So let's just load up and be done with it."
"I'm just glad that freak Bane ain't around. Hell, I'm surprise that the bat ain't here either!" The trio were suddenly surprised however, when one of them was taken down effortlessly after Batgirl slammed, feet first, into his lower back. "Dammit! You just had to mention him didn't you," yelled one of the thugs, who soon found himself wincing in pain after an expertly tossed Batarang struck his rifle, forcing it away from his hand. Before he could recover, a sharp fist ended up connecting with his jaw.
"Wait! You ain't the bat," the man grunted after he was forcefully pinned to the wall by a Batclaw.
"It's Batgirl. Introductions aside you're going to tell me everything about your boss and what he has planned for the stolen venom."
The thug refused to comment, stating that she wasn't the dark knight so there was less to fear. The lack of respect struck a nerve with Batgirl, who asked again with a sharper tone as she closed in on him. Once again he refused to talk, so she decided to take a different route. Wrapping up a foot of thick cable wire, she released him from her Batclaw, only to send him sailing into the air after using her line grappler. The tail end of the cable struck with the ceiling, leaving the panicked thug to dangle upside down by a singular foot.
"Now maybe you'll be a little more cooperative. Talk and maybe I'll bring you back down softly."
"Dammit, he'll kill me," the goon yelled in fear after the cable shook from Batgirl's simple thug, "Alright, alright! It was the Penguin! He's the one having us nab all the venom! But I don't know what for, he ain't telling us. You gotta believe me!" To be quite honest she wasn't too surprised with the reveal. "Now get me down," the man pleaded before, suddenly, a titanic arm came bursting through the rooftop and grabbed a hold of him.
"I must thank you for using your final moment to deliver me some valuable information." Smashing in like the monster that he was, Bane made a resounding impact as his humongous form touched the ground. He was rather surprised to see Batgirl before him, instead of the city's usual silent protector, and casually tossed the line cable back at her. The device snapped back into place as she readied herself for any sudden moments from Bane. Squeezing at the throat of the poor thug, it was clear that he was ready to kill the man at a moment's notice.
"Let him go, Bane," Batgirl bravely shouted, despite the obvious size difference between them. He ignored her plea, instead applying more pressure, stating that the unfortunate man would be an example of what he had in store for the Penguin. "I said let him go, Bane!"
"Unfortunately for you and him, you are not the Batman, and even then I see no reason to bow to your requests," Bane stated with a cold stare.
"Help...me..." The helpless thug was beginning to fade fast as the life was being drained completely out of him. Barbara knew that she had to make a move now or the man's life was lost. With quick succession, the muscular giant howled as a trio of shock-powered Batarangs connected and imploded on his massive chest. It was just enough to loosen his grip and, using the Batclaw, she reeled in the goon who amazingly thanked her for the rescue. She didn't waste a moment urging him to revive the other two and get out as soon as they could.
Insulted, Bane rushed straight at her. It was only due to her sharpened reflexes that she was able to evade in time. Instinctively she attempted a counterstrike, but unfortunately, she nearly snapped a knuckle after making contact with his tremendous back. She backed off, for a moment, out of the corner of her eye she spotted the Penguin's goon squad making a break for it. Bane noticed as well, but his attention returned to the brave bat after another shocking Batarang struck him. Of course this was only serving to anger the empowered giant even more than he already was.
"For your foolishness, I will break you Batgirl! You will serve as my message to the Penguin, and the Batman!"
With that statement, Barbara knew that she was now completely in over her head. The dark knight himself had problems dealing with Bane during their numerous encounters. How was she going to survive against this venom-filled beast of a man?
The venom! Would she actually, not even he wouldn't go that far! But Bane had murder in his cold eyes, and as drastic as it may seem, she had to do something, otherwise she really was going to die there and then!
Bane rushed at her once more with a fierce growl, but just as before, Barbara was able to dodge his wild stampede. As she did so however, she tossed a smoke pellet directly at his eyes. The marble-like object burst as it made contact, temporarily blinding the big man, although doing nothing to cool his rage. With the venom packed crate still intact, Barbara quickly loaded up an injector-like device containing the serum as she heard Bane curse her in Spanish. His blindness wouldn't last much longer. Her gloved hand shook nerves born from what she was about to do.
"Here it goes," she muttered to herself, her breath held, as she injected the venom into her body. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
