Pale, rail-thin, and bespectacled; fifteen year old Jeff Samuels threw his book-bag over his shoulder, let out a deep, resigned sigh and headed out the front door into the world beyond. By no means a social butterfly, Jeff was most definitely not looking forward to yet another day at school. With his love of sci-fi, comics, and video gaming, and an intellect far in excess of his fellow students, the young many often found himself the odd man out among his classmates.
Jeff did his best to put his social concerns aside and headed on down the sidewalk toward his neighbors house. His buddy Dane, a friend for as long as Jeff could remember had none of the problems fitting in that he did. Fit, good looking, and with a cocky personality, the taller blond boy was a shining star amongst the popular cliques at school. What little social standing Jeff did have came as a direct result of Dane's having maintained their childhood friendship up until the present day.
Jeff was grateful for this to be sure; but, if he were pressed he would have to admit that he resented Dane more than a little. His friend tended to act in a slightly demeaning, condescending manner towards him; almost as if he were doing Jeff a favor by sinking so low as to associate with him.
Dane saw Jack and yelled out, "What's up man? Come on in!"
Jack smiled and walked into Dane's house.
"Where's your mom at Dane?" Jack asked in a quizzical manner.
"She had to go to work early."
Jack and Dane sat down on the couch and turned on the television. A news anchor began speaking intensely into the screen, "I remind you all to stay indoors at all costs. It appears that this event is occurring worldwide to all people. Remember stay indoors at all costs. Don't try to reach loved ones. They should be safe where they are."
Dane looked at Jack, "What the fuck is going on?"
The two instinctively got up and walked to the window. Everything outside appeared to be fine. It was a beautiful day, the birds were singing, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Jack spoke first, "I don't see anything crazy happening out there"
Dane nodded in agreement, "It looks safe to me. I think that guy was full of shit."
Jack was nervous, "I don't know man. He sounded pretty serious."
Dane smiled, "This stuff happens all the time. Remember Y2K? Everyone had their panties in a bunch for no good reason."
Jack had to admit that Dane was making a good point, "You're probably right. It looks fine out there."
Jack and Dane decided against the news anchor's warnings and went outside to go to school. They walked for about five minutes and everything seemed fine. There were other people on the streets and life seemed to be going on as it usually does.
Suddenly Dane yelled, "What the fuck is that?"
Jack spun around and saw thousands of circular objects flying towards the street he was on. They were silver, shiny, and appeared to be perfectly spherical. Jack and Dane looked at each other and instinctively knew that whatever they were, they were bad. Jack and Dane turned and ran as fast as they could trying to get back to Dane's house. Jack had never been more terrified in his life. As they ran they heard screams coming from behind them. Jack pumped his legs with all of his might trying to get away.
Suddenly he felt Dane slip next to him. Dane yelled in pain and Jack stopped to help him, "Get up man! Those things are coming!" As Jack helped Dane up one of the spheres flew towards the two of them.
Jack scurried to pull Dane up, but before Dane could get to his feet, the sphere smacked Dane in the head. Whatever the sphere was it was a liquid as Dane's head was absorbed by the sphere. His body locked still and wouldn't move. Jack didn't want to leave his friend behind, but he had no other option. He saw the house next to him was open so he dashed in hoping not to get caught.
Right when he stepped foot into the house he felt everything go numb as if he was paralyzed. He then felt a cool liquid on the back of his head as his vision was slowly turned to black.
Jack was scared, terrified, and had no clue what was going on.
Unbeknownst to Jack, this same event had happened to over half of the world as well. Jack's body, with its sphere on top stood up and walked into the street where dozens of other bodies congregated. They all lined up in uniform lines. Suddenly with a flash all of the bodies disappeared and all that was left were the spheres.
Suddenly Jack regained vision along with the other people. He couldn't move, but he could tell that his body was gone. He screamed in terror, and his screams were followed by other people's cries and sobs. He heard a familiar voice to his left, "Jack! It's Dane! What the hell happened? Where did all of our bodies go?"
Jack replied, "I have no idea. This is fucked up man!"
Suddenly in front of the group of perfectly lined heads there was a brilliant flash, and in its wake was all of the bodies. The bodies looked strange without any heads, but oddly enough they all had a device of some sort around the neck.
Jack asked Dane, "What are they doing?"
Dane was speechless as the bodies began to walk towards the heads. The bodies all stood behind each head, but in strange orders. In front of Jack was a girl of some sort, and behind her head was a black teenager's body. Suddenly Jack felt his head rise and feeling returned to him but it was not his body!
Whose body is Jack now on?
