Chapter #5

to the palace.

"Where are we going?" asked Eton, seeing that Myrrh had picked up speed and was flying passed the small islands.

"The royal palace." replied Myrrh. "It's where we live. You see, I'm a princess, which makes you a prince."

Eton blushed slightly. "A... prince?" he asked.

Myrrh giggled. "Yep. The palace is on the main continent, just passed these islands."

Eton watched in awe at the large and small islands as they passed them. "What's keeping them above the ground?" he asked, curious. "Why haven't we, err, humans found them by now?"

"Those are good questions, Eton." said Myrrh. "We do not know what keeps them afloat in the air but it is though powerful magics that make these islands and continents of the sky invisible and non-corporeal to humans. It is what has allowed us to live in peace these many centuries."

Eton nodded then looked forward again to see an ancient palace below them. "Is that the palace?" he asked.

"Yes, it is." replied Myrrh. "We maintain the original outside design to honor our ancestors but the inside is quite modern as you will soon see."

Upon landing at the main entrance, Myrrh turned to Eton. "Inside, you will find a hall with Misterians standing at attention on either side." she said, seriously. "They are not permitted to move or speak, while on duty, guarding the entrance hall unless there is danger." she smiled. "Do not speak, keep your eyes forward, and do not stop walking until we enter the main place, understand?"

Eton nodded, though he was a bit confused. Myrrh took his hand and led him passed the main doors, which opened for them, revealing a beautifully decorated hall with smooth multi colored floors, walls and ceilings that seemed to change as they entered the hall. Eton tried his best to keep his eyes forward but the changing walls and floors and ceilings was very distracting and he could not help dart his eyes up. He saw the ceiling showing changing images of his rescue of Myrrh as James and his change into a little boy over and over. Each time, it ended with Eton awakening to his new form.

"Interesting." he thought. "It's like the palace hall is announcing our arrival."

Eton did not hear a word from the guards and nor did he see any of them move a muscle as they passed them, it was a bit unnerving to him to think that they were really not statues. Upon reaching the end of the hall, Myrrh touched the wall then, with her free hand, took Eton's wrist and had him touch the wall as well. The wall vanished, revealing a great room beyond which they entered as the wall reappeared behind them.

"Now we can talk freely." she said, smiling. "The silence serves as a gesture of respect to the guards, both Valkyrie and Archangels, men and women who protect the palace and our people."

Eton nodded then looked around to see that the room they were in had an halls branching off into several directions, each of which seemed to have been decorated to honor a different culture. He turned to Myrrh, confused. "The palace looked a little smaller from the outside." he said.

Myrrh giggled. "Nothing is as it seems." she replied. "It's a matter of perspective. The palace seems smaller on the outside only because most of it is invisible to the naked eye." she smiled. "Remember, we maintain the 'original' outer look to honor our ancestors."

Eton's eyes widened, glistening with wonder. "That's so cool!" he said, excited. "What does the palace really look like?"

Myrrh touched Eton's nose, giggling. "You'll find out in time." she said. "I didn't see the true look of the palace until I was a hundred years old."

Eton looked at Myrrh, stunned. "A hun... hundred years old!?" he asked. "You look no older than twenty, twenty five."

"Why thank you, Eton." said Myrrh with a smile. "I'm actually 485 years old. We Misterians live a long time, 2500 to 3000 years, in fact so you have all the time in the world, young man."

Eton's jaw dropped with his eyes still wide in shock, causing Myrrh to laugh. "Please close your mouth, a bird might make a nest in there."

A laugh escaped Eton's throat as he closed his mouth. "I'm guessing that is but the first of many shocking discoveries." he said, now walking with Myrrh again. "I wish my little sister, Nicole could see all of this. She always dreams about flying among the clouds."

Myrrh smiled but did not respond as an image of Nicole entered her mind. "I wonder." she thought. "Could she be our 'missing angel'?"
