Chapter #4

Virtual Simulation

It was very late, close to dawn, when I found it.

I spent the entire night at a friend's house party. I was having so much fun that I forgot to keep track of the time, because I promised my parents that I would be home by midnight. When I checked the time, it was half past three in the morning! I knew that I was late, and I knew that I would be trouble when I got back home. I left the party and started walking through the park alone. I was in no hurry. On my journey home however, I stumbled across something that I, and most likely anyone else, had never noticed.

In the bottom corner of the park, under large, thick bushes, I found a metal door on the ground. Curiously I reached for the handle and pulled the door open. Under the door I saw a staircase leading into pitch black darkness.

Normally I would close the door, walk away and try to forget what I had just seen. But for some reason that even now I fail to recall, I took out a cigarette lighter from my pocket, lit it up and started making my way down the mysterious stairs, without any concern for what I might find. Mind you, I did have a few drinks that night...

As I climbed down the stairs it started to get harder and harder to see in the darkness, until finally I reached the bottom of the staircase. Suddenly the darkness was overcome by lights, allowing me to look at my surroundings clearly. I looked around and I was mesmerized by what I found.

I was standing in the middle of what appeared to be an abandoned laboratory, hidden away from the outside world. The floor was made of cold steel and there was amazing machinery, covered with piles of scrap and debris, everywhere. It was like a glimpse into the future. Investigating the laboratory even further, still slightly tipsy, I stumbled into another room, where something caught my attention. Upon entering I gazed into the room to see a huge piece of machinery that intrigued me: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/File:Vault...

Twelve cryogenic pods circled a large mechanism. As I looked around, I noticed that only two pods were vacant. The other pods were apparently occupied, but it was hard to tell, the freezing cold atmosphere fogged up the pods, making it difficult to tell, but whatever figures were occupying them, it appeared that they were all cryogenically frozen. I investigated the system further, discovering that it was a virtual simulation system, and that the ten occupants were most probably living in a virtual world.

Virtual reality had always been a personal dream of mine. I always dreamed of entering a virtual world where anything was possible, and standing there, gazing at the very piece of machinery that I always anticipated, it seemed that my dream had finally come true.

Without any further hesitation I climbed into one of the empty pods. As the pod door closed behind me, I started to lose consciousness. As I struggled to keep my eyes open, I started having strange illusions until, finally, I lost all consciousness.

Later I woke up. I realized that virtual reality was no longer a dream.

When I woke up however, I found that I was no longer in my original body, but instead I was in the body of a eight year old girl! What kind of sick reality did I stumble across?
