The thought of hanging out with these four girls is definitely appealing, and the thought that could could literally get into their underwear even more appealing. You've haven't got many decent grades, and working alongside these girls could be a way that you'll do well in Humanities - after all, they'll be doing most of the hard work monitoring and documenting the research, and with their enthusiasm it's got to end up scoring well. So why not? Um - because you have to pretend to be a girl. That's a pretty good objection to the whole thing. What would your mates say? What would you mom say? You'd be a laughing stock - how could anyone take you seriously?
No, this idea just won't work.
You express your concerns to Rachael, and despite everything make it clear that you can't agree to go ahead with the project.
Rachael replies, with a combination of frustration (at a plan going south) and genuine sorrow. "Oh, come on Tony! I know it's not what you'd like but with the group we've got I can't see anything else that would work. This is a sure-fire way to get decent grades. We don't have time to come up with any other ideas now, so guess we can say goodbye to a decent project or our grades now."
Grief, now she's making you feel guilty, as if the whole thing is your fault. "Look, I'm sorry," you reply. "It's not that I don't want to be involved, it's just what everyone will think of me dressing as a girl."
"It's OK Tony, I understand." Rachael appears to be thinking to herself. "So you're happy with the project itself, it's basically what people will think that concerns you most? So, for instance, you'd be OK if nobody knew it was you dressing up?"
"Well, I guess so, yes. But if I turn up here tomorrow dressed as a girl everyone in the school will know it's me!"
"OK then. So, if we can arrange it so that nobody at school ever knows it's you, would you do it?"
"Well, yeah, I suppose so, but there's no way that you could..." you start, but are cut short by Rachael.
"Yes or no? If nobody ever knows, would you do it?"
"Well, I guess so then.Yes."
Rachael smiles warmly at you. "That's great. Thanks Tony. We've got some planning to do. I think it would be best if we start the project after the weekend to give us time to prepare. OK?"
"Yeah, sure. Although I'm not sure how you think we can keep it that tight a secret." A sudden thought occurs to you. "And I'm not sure what my mom's going to think about it."
Rachael leans towards you and gives to a little peck on your cheek. "Don't worry about it. I can have a word with your mom and explain it all. I'll catch up with you later, OK?" The bell rings to signify end of the class, and the normal chaos ensues as you gather your books together, and head to your next class.
