Lauren sat in the cell with the blanket wrapped tightly around her body. She found it hard to place her bare feet on the cold floor of the cell.
“Come on dad, hurry up and get here before they put someone in here with me” she thought to herself. The humiliated young woman had gone from worrying about her father to being absolutely disgusted with him. Lauren found her father’s reaction to her predicament troubling in that he wasn’t really concerned at all. Upon learning that his daughter had been teleported to a local park, totally butt naked and arrested, he reacted not with horror, but with intrigue.
“How extraordinary! So my machine works. All my hard work has paid off. What did it feel like Lauren?”
“Dad, did you not hear what I just said” Do you have any idea how utterly humiliating this has been for me. I was paraded through a precinct in nothing but a small blanket and this is only after giving a cop and a few pigeon feeders at the park an eyeful. HOW DO YOU THINK I FEEL!?!?”
“Young lady, watch your mouth, I’m still you’re father and you cannot talk to me like that”
“Bu-But dad”
“No buts young lady. As far as I’m concerned, you have only yourself to blame for your current predicament. I told you that it was dangerous in the basement, but you didn’t listen”
“I was only trying to help”
“Enough! Lauren it’s done. What precinct did they take you to? I’ll come get you and hopefully get them to drop the charges” I hope you appreciate this.
I’ll have to give up a day of work to bail you’re naked behind out of jail”
“Appreciate?!”
“Lauren you have five seconds to tell me where you are or else I’m hanging up and going back to work”
Lauren sat in the cold cell replaying that conversation in her mind over and over again. It was the kind of conversation that completely personified the relationship she had with both her parents. They were all about their careers and Lauren always took a back seat and was even thrown completely out of the car at times.
Stephen arrived to pick Lauren up after about an hour and began the process of bailing her out. Lauren was let out of the cell and was ecstatic to be able to finally put her clothes back on. She was still ticked off at her father, but thought it best to just keep her mouth shut.
As they drove home in silence, Lauren thought about the events of the day. She did disobey her father. She should have known that he had it under control and that he was trying to protect her. Lauren felt guilty about yelling at him over the phone and decided to break the silence by apologizing.
“Daddy, I’m sorry I yelled at you. I should have listened when you told me to leave the basement. I was just so embarrassed. Thank you for coming to pick me up and for getting them to drop the indecent exposure charge”
“I’m sorry Lauren, I bailed you out, but I was not able to get them to drop the indecent exposure charge. I tried to give them a story of how you were just performing some sort of college initiation. But at the end of the day, you were caught naked in public and they have to charge you”
Lauren’s feeling of goodwill towards her father instantly evaporated.
“What! Why didn’t you tell them the truth? Why didn’t you tell them about your machine going haywire? Your teleporter thingamajig gets me stranded butt naked in public, arrested and you don’t even have the decency to clear me of the charges.”
“That’s it missy! I’ve had enough of your attitude. If you had listened to me in the first place, you wouldn’t be in this situation. You obviously need to think about that some more. When we get home, you are to go straight to your room. We’ll talk more when your mother gets home.”
Lauren’s mother Cheryl arrived home later that night. Cheryl was the director of research and development for a company specializing in military equipment and she was every bit the workaholic that her husband Stephen was.
“Stephen that’s astounding. You finally did it. I’m so proud of you”
“Yeah well thanks, but there’s also some not so good news. Lauren was accidentally hit with one of the beams and was technically the first subject to successfully be teleported.” I told her to stay out of the basement, but in typical teenager fashion, she disobeyed and wound up naked in the park and then was arrested. I bailed her out but because I couldn’t tell him about the teleporter the charges will stick. Lauren copped an attitude with me so I sent her to her room.”
“I see, well it is what it is. You shouldn’t blame yourself Stephen. You tried to get her to leave the basement and she didn’t. Lauren knows she is not to go down there when you are working. You made the right decision in not telling the police about the machine. Nobody can know about it until my colleagues and I have analyzed it. We better go upstairs and have a little discussion with our daughter about responsibility and to remind her that she is not to say a word to anyone about your machine.”
Stephen and Cheryl sternly walked up to their daughter’s room and knocked on the door.
“Lauren we need to talk to you”
“I’m not interested in talking to either of you right now. I can’t believe how apathetic you both are to what happened to me today. Is your jobs really that important to you?”
Stephen and Cheryl opened the door and were about to start their discussion but before either could say anything; Lauren disappeared in a flash of light, once again leaving every stitch of clothing she had been wearing in a pile on the floor of her bedroom.
Despite seeing their daughter disappear before their eyes and despite the knowledge that she would undoubtedly be placed in a public setting completely nude, they could only stare at the pile of Lauren’s crumpled clothing with awe and excitement.
“Incredible!” the two uttered in unison.
As it turned out, their jobs really did mean that much to them.
