Just as Cameron and Jordyn were about to head up to her room, the sound of approaching footsteps caught their attention. Linda Brown, Jordyn’s mother, appeared in the hallway, a warm smile on her face.
“Oh, Cameron! Good morning, sweetheart,” she greeted cheerfully. “I was just about to run an errand, but since you’re here, I have a little favor to ask.”
Cameron blinked. “Uh… sure? What is it?”
Jordyn raised an eyebrow, already sensing that her mother was up to something. “Mom, what kind of ‘favor’ are we talking about?”
Linda’s smile widened. “Well, I just remembered that I promised Melissa I’d drop off some clothes for her. She left a bunch of outfits here last time she visited, and she needs them for something today. I was going to take them over myself, but since you two are just hanging out, I thought maybe you wouldn’t mind doing it for me?”
Jordyn groaned. “Mom, seriously? You’re making us your delivery service?”
“Oh, come on, it’s not that big of a deal. Melissa’s apartment is just a few blocks away. You could skate there in no time,” Linda pointed out, then turned her attention to Cameron. “Besides, I’d really appreciate the help. And I’m sure Melissa would love to see you, Cam.” She gave him a playful wink.
Cameron shifted uncomfortably. He liked Melissa well enough—Jordyn’s older sister was cool and nice—but he wasn’t exactly eager to do a favor that involved running across town with a bunch of clothes.
Jordyn sighed in resignation. “Fine, I guess we can do it. But you owe us, Mom.”
Linda grinned. “Deal! The bag is in the laundry room. Thanks, kids! I’ll see you later.” With that, she grabbed her purse and headed out the door, leaving Cameron and Jordyn standing there.
Cameron let out a breath. “Well, that just happened.”
Jordyn rolled her eyes. “Yeah, I should have known she was up to something. Come on, let’s get this over with.”
The two of them headed to the laundry room, where a large shopping bag sat on top of the dryer. Cameron eyed it warily. “How much stuff did she leave behind?”
Jordyn picked it up and peeked inside. “Oh wow, she left a lot. There’s, like, dresses, skirts, a ton of girly stuff in here.”
Cameron chuckled. “Melissa always was into fashion.”
Jordyn smirked and nudged him. “Hey, you should totally try something on.”
Cameron shot her a deadpan look. “Yeah, not happening.”
Jordyn laughed. “Relax, I’m just messing with you. Come on, let’s get going before my mom finds another chore for us.”
With that, the two of them grabbed their skateboards and set off toward Melissa’s apartment, unaware that this simple delivery would soon take a turn for the unexpected.
