In the back of the classroom, behind rows of kids sitting cross-legged on the floor, Mia Hooper was taking her shoes off to show her friend Emily her painted toe nails. "My mommy helped me with them. Isn't they beautiful?"
They were more than just beautiful to Emily. The purple sparkly polish on the first grader's toes was a sign of adulthood and poor little Emily, the youngest of her family, really wanted to be all grown up. "You're so lucky. Mommy won't let me get painted nails."
"Do you want some nail paint? I took the bottle." Indeed she had, as she plucked the little glass container from her back pocket. "Let's do it right now!"
Emily looked up towards the front of the room. Their teacher this year was rather new, and often failed at keeping the kids under control. Now was no exception, as many kids were playing with each other or absorbed in some other activities. "Yeah! Let's paint my nails!"
And so Emily stripped her feet bare, and the two girls worked with the polish. Finally, after grueling minutes of work, they had all ten toes sparkling purple. It wasn't as neat and tidy as Mia's pedicure, but to Emily it was the most beautiful thing in the world.
Later in the day, Emily began to have second thoughts. Her mommy hadn't outright forbidden nail polish, but it wasn't something she'd normally let her young daughter have. How would she react to it? Emily began to nervously kneed her sock between her toes. She'd have to be sneaky until the paint faded away.
