Life hadn't gone the way you expected it to, you were still living at hope and you had already graduated college with high honours at such a young age. You thought you'd be working for NASA or another tech company with your knowledge but as you read in your recruitment contracts, they'd own whatever you invented. You had tried your own start up but no one was interested in half your devices, others were confiscated by the government. With student loans piling up and not wanting to work in the tech industry, you spent a couple of months working on a business degree (more debts) and now worked as a corporate drone.
Your body switching machine had been put on hold all this time. When you finished building it and ran diagnostics you discovered that it only had a 75% chance of swapping both minds over, and that included swapping back and it wasn't an issue with any particular pod. So you could've erased someone else's mind or had them erase yours. It wasn't until after you scrapped the machine for money when you worked out the hypothetical solution to the problem. Unfortunately you didn't have the time or money to work on the machine, but for the past year you've slowly been rebuilding it.
As for your family:
Kyle was still in college, like you he could've graduated by now but he still didn't like to put the effort in. He just went along with the flow, enjoying the college life while effortlessly passing his exams. He decided to move into a dorm for that experience, even though you didn't live far from campus. He was dating a girl named Robin, who he recently got pregnant.
Erika had moved out of the house after she returned from being sent to boarding school for her senior years of high school and still held a grudge against your father for sending her there. Her style had changed quite a lot, she still had black hair but she no longer wore as much piercings. As she spent a year away from her friends, they had grown a part. She was currently living with your aunt Kelly, working as a make-up artist.
Kim; - your mother is still a teacher, though after getting into a car accident last year, she has been left wheelchair bound. The driver of the other car was at fault and left uninjured but has refused to pay for the medical bills. While she still puts on a smile, you can tell she fakes it most of the time.
Mark; your father - is now working at a hardware store, helping bring in extra income. He's still rather busy and you don't see him a whole lot. His relationship with Erika has degraded though he's been trying to fix things. At first he was glad you stopped inventing things and was happy you got a normal job, though recently he has began to regret his disapproval for your inventions.
Your Aunt Kelly is no longer a model, which she is thankful for, but without many skills outside the industry she became a make-up artist for the same company. They once again gave her the short end of the stick and even though she's now Erika's boss, she gets the same wage. Now that she's no longer forced to eat certain foods or look a certain way, she's put on a bit of weight and no longer cares about her appearance as much.
As for the other people in your life:
Professor Michelle Anderson, was still working at the university and was one of your many teachers. She was hostile to you at first and even tried to fail you out of one of your courses, though after you contested it, she faced disciplinary action and didn't bother you again. She was the person who warned you about reading contracts before getting a job, a lesson she found out the hard way when the university took credit for one of your stolen inventions. Knowing the university could claim her inventions and since you stopped yours, she no longer felt threatened by you and that jealously has turned to admiration. You were angry that she had stolen your invention but you were also thankful for her warning. Now that she wasn't hostile towards you and she was no longer your professor you couldn't deny you felt something for her as well. You have been dating for three months.
Ronald Tramp - he still dreams of being able to offer people a body swapping service one day and tried to recruit you. He didn't know you had some so close to the technology and you didn't know that was the thing he was after. So when you saw that your inventions would belong to him, you turned down his offer. He begrudgingly accepted this and has since gone into politics, he now runs the state where you live.
Shana White, was still the cruel and confident woman she has always been. Her father had employed her, making her start at the bottom and work her way up. Six months ago she had been a clerk below your position, a spot she had for about a year. Three months ago, she had been promoted to the same position and you shared your work space. Last month she had been promoted your supervisor and you thought your job was about to get easier. You couldn't have been more wrong. She used her time as your colleague to learn a great deal about you, so she knew how smart you were and pushed you to your limits. She was praised for increasing work productivity and was now the department head, where she now ruled with an iron fist, making sure you were always working your hardest. Lisabelle was still her ever faithful servant, and now Shana had a position of power, you saw her more often.
You hated your job because of Shana and that was beginning to affect your day to day life. Though now you were once again motivated to work on your body switching machine and had began to pool in the resources. Since you were dating now, Michelle was willing to help, especially since she found out if she built it herself it'd belong to the university. Even your father began helping out in secret, sometimes you'd find extra parts you were lacking, other times when you came home from work, it had been worked on further.
Now after a five year hiatus, your machine was ready once more. With advancements in computer technology it was even better than before, it also scanned each users brain patterns and saved a back up just in case of the .01% failure rate of it copy both minds over.
