Hiding in the Attic

by: The X Author IconMail Icon
Immediately I headed for the stairs, aiming to reach the attic quickly before Katelyn started looking. Years of clutter were all stuffed in the small space, which would make it easier to hide. Of course part of me really didn't want to hide, to let her find me, but I would play the game if it made her happy.

Reaching the cramped loft space, I took in the familiar sight. Stacks of boxes and shelves were all over the place, with tons of stuff just loose on the floor. Anything from deflated footballs to misfitting clothes to ancient art projects. There was a tray of crafts, with the googly eyes and feathers and q-tips, there was a curtain, there was a half-used roll of duct tape, there were sheets draped from the rafters a foot above my head. There was even a stool to the side of the room. And the list went on of all the stuff that was crammed inside.

I searched for a decent hiding spot, scanning the room for something that would conceal me in a subtle way. In the end I decided that the best way to hide would be to get as low to the ground as possible, so I crawled under one of the collapsed curtains, squeezing between a pile of boxes and a shelf, my front resting on the wooden floor.

Settling down to wait for Katelyn, I immediately thought of how childish this was. We were pretty much playing hide and seek, something I hadn't done in years. All too quickly I remembered that during those games I sucked at hiding because I couldn't take the tension.

After a few minutes listening to my heartbeat I heard footsteps ascending the stairs. When Katelyn stepped into the attic my breath caught in my throat, an old habit that never really worked.

"If you turn yourself in now," she said in a cheesy voice, "I'll make sure that your sentence is softened."

My view was blocked by the curtain draped over me, so all I had to go on was her breathing and the light padding of her footsteps. I heard them come right behind me, then stop as if she knew I was there...

You have the following choices:

1. She found me

2. She passed me
