I cocked an eyebrow.

"That's a little unexpected. What happened to hoodies? I thought you wouldn't be caught dead in a swimsuit."

Maddie snorted and turned away.

"Stop it, really!”

I stifled a smile. She was a delicate girl, and over the years I’d learned exactly what buttons to push to get her blushing. But I also knew when to stop.

“Okay, okay, sorry.” I said, “But I’m curious about the place. How do we get there exactly?”

“We take a boat.” Maddie said, “It sounds dangerous, I know, but I’ve been using my Dad’s old Kayak from the garage and I haven’t had any trouble yet.” Her blush was still there, but fading quickly. I’d rarely seen her this excited about something and, to be completely honest, it was making me more than a little curious.

“Will the boat fit two people?” I asked.

“It’d be a squeeze, but we’ll manage.” Maddie replied.

It would be all to easy to make another quip about us piled on top of each other like that, but I decided to cut her some slack on the teasing for the moment. It was a nice change to see her genuinely enthusiastic about something. She’d even got a bag packed already.

“I left the boat in a little spot behind some rocks on the beach,” she said, “It should still be there.” Maddie suddenly got a look of confusion on her face, before her eyes widened. “Oh shoot! I forgot to tell you to bring some things!” She looked down at her bag.
“My house is right over there,” I said, “I could just-“

“No, no it’s alright,” Maddie’s face flushed, “It wasn’t important anyway.” She slung her bag over her shoulder. “We should get going anyway.” I shrugged. She really was eager to get a move on.

We hitched our bikes up and began the trek down to the beach. The time flew by, and eventually we made it. The kayak was there, just where Maddie said it was, and soon we had got it floating in the water. Maddie had rolled up her pants and taken off her shoes to keep herself from getting wet as she shoved the vessel into the sea. Even this little act caused her to blush, a reaction she very unsuccessfully tried to hide by pulling her hoodie over her head and turning away.

Maddie took the seat at the front, and I right behind her.

“Now, it’s just about 5 minutes out,” she said, “Not too bad, but completely out of sight of the beach.” I shrugged. I couldn’t hold back the need to tease my favorite neighbor girl any longer.

“You’ve put a lot of thought into this,” I said, “Have you really wanted to get me alone that badly?”

I had a smug smile, as I knew my words had at least gotten a shiver out of her.

“No, no it’s just, this is a really cool place, and you know, I thought that, maybe you’d like to see it, that’s all.” She spoke louder, almost stumbling over her words. I could see her toes scrunch from this position, her black polish shining like little beach pebbles.

“Sorry, Maddie, but you’re just so fun to tease.” I said.

“It’s okay…. I’m used to it by now.” I could hear her lips forming into a smile as she spoke.

As we paddled on, the island came into view. At first just a speck on the horizon, a few trees and some grass, and finally a great rock at the far end.

“See? Right over there!” Maddie said.

We paddled for a few more minutes, before finally…
