"Vulgar language, cruelty, unneeded volume, anger," Ms. Polluck's voice was calm as she repeated the charges laid at Ashley's good and injured legs, but the sharp glare of her eyes had Ashley wishing she could shrink away to nothingness right then and there.
"I...I didn't think-"
"No, Ashley, no you didn't think. Perhaps it was wrong of me to give you a classroom of your own, clearly you're too immature for that. No, what you need, Ashley, is to be punished and I can think of no greater punishment than for you to step down as the Economics teacher and to take up an assistant teaching position under Ms. Farron. You are to abide by her rules and her planned activities for the gym. If I hear one cruel label spilling from your lips, one jibe, one raised syllable, you will be terminated and also owe the school for your use of the VIP room, do I make myself clear?"
"Yes, Ms. Polluck."
Ashley reached towards a butterscotch candy then, but Ms. Polluck's fat hand stopped it. "Now owing to your injured position, you will still live in the VIP room, still be under Tasha's expert care, but you will need to stay in the bleachers during gym time and in the office between classes. You are not to irritate your leg by hobbling about as you are wont to do and don't think I haven't heard about what you've said during your time in the hallways."
Ashley nodded, keeping her face as neutral as possible.
"You may leave, but first check in on Ms. Farron in the gym, would you? I believe she has some instructions for you regarding your new position."
Again, Ashley nodded and hobbled out of the room only to find Tasha just outside, one arm landing on her shoulder.
"I take you to gym."
///
The gym was as she remembered it, the smell of exertion in the air, the old bleachers, the scuffed floor, all of it was the same. What had changed was her former assistant and new superior.
Ms. Farron had only grown larger since Ashley had last seen her, her middle now a drooping apron of a belly, her thighs wedged together, quivering below a rear so wide it looked capable of taking up half a bleacher by itself.
But there was no scorn in her co-workers eyes as she looked at Ashley, instead only smiling sadly, her rounder cheeks and extra chin jiggling a bit as she spoke to the cocky teacher who had thought she had finally gotten her life back together.
