This choice: Ms. Porter notices she has quite a talent for rubenesque figures. • Go Back...Chapter #6Ms. Portier notices she has quite a talent for ... by: wowee That night Ms. Porter had cozied down in her lounging chair, with a trusty cup of coffee in hand. Before turning on the T.V for a night consisting of nothing but T.V. and then dinner alone as she'd planned, she glanced at the picture she'd drawn earlier that morning once more. She really had surprised herself with how nice the charcoal work had turned out, so much so that she had even brought it back to her own dorm(-well lodge was a better word, this place felt far too big for just one person.) Thinking about the picture though, it was a shame that no girls in any of her other classes had volunteered to pose. So instead in those classes she'd once again been forced to give a boring lecture by the book with an "ughh" slide show accompaniment. That was beyond boring, and the worst thing was the slide projector often muted the luscious beautiful colors in the original works of art, the least they could do was include an HD scan of a featured picture. For The entire rest of the day her hand had yearned for a chance to draw again, but here she was at 'home' and the excitement and passion to paint she had felt earlier that morning seemed to be gone.
That's when an idea slowly worked it's way across her mind. Why not give this picture to the girl as as thanks for volunteering? The girl, oh, what was her name again? Raquel! Getting up and searching the Buttercombe academy private student-teacher directory she found that her student-Raquel's room wasn't too far.

Minutes later Ms. Porter had arrived, completely unannounced, but with a picture in one hand, and as a bonus gift, a box of thin mints in the other. With a knock on the door, she began to wonder if perhaps she should've called first to make sure there was someone in...but at the time calling a student out of the blue seemed like such an odd thing to do, if she showed up with the specific purpose of giving her the sketch things would seem perfectly normal.
"Hullo?" came a sheepish voice just inside the door. There was the thundering sound of heavy footsteps thumping towards the door before it opened. There stood all 200lbs+ of Raquel, looking a bit awestruck by her sudden visitor. She had dropped uniform and was now in what Ms.Porter recognized as 'flop clothes'. A simple T-shirt (with thick fat arms and pale white shoulders squeezed through the t-shirts sleeves) and pink (and admittedly better fitting) fuzzy sweat pants, but the entire ensemble had left her stomach exposed for what was supposed to be a night in. The girl was clearly not expecting anyone other than her roommate to see her that night let alone someone from the school.
"Hi, um...Surprise! How are things Raquel?" asked Ms. Porter hoping to break the awkward silence that had filled the space between them. "I just wanted to come by and say thanks for helping out today." She offered the picture and box of cookies out to her to instill the point that this was not crazy but perfectly normal.
"Yeah. I'm fine. My roommate- Stacy- she's out a lot, so it's usually just me here." Raquel answered, eyes still as wide as saucers but motioning with her head towards the now unpopulated room. She obviously had been surprised by this visit almost as if she'd seen a burglar instead of a teacher, but much to Ms.Porter's delight Raquel did indeed invite her in. Taking a seat on the couch (a still warm deep dip of a spot where she guessed Raquel must have just been sitting) Ms. Porter sat the drawing down gently on a nearby counter top, then the box of cookies on the table in front of her, and finally a thermos of coffee she'd clipped to her belt. As Raquel settled in (not on the couch but in a separate wide backed lounging chair as to face her teacher) Ms. Porter opened the box, on the table and a whiff of Girl Scout minty goodness filled the room.
"So you just wanna say thanks?" asked Raquel licking her lips a tiny bit but waiting for her teacher to take a cookie from the box first before helping herself.
"Yeah, and...well just talk, you know? You can call me Meg by the way." explained Megan Porter as she dug into the box and helped herself to two of the cookies. Raquel shortly followed suit although her handful from the box was much larger than that of her teachers.
"Sooo...Do you like Art, Raquel?" asked Meg after a sip of coffee.
Raquel shrugged her wide white shoulders innocently causing her shirt to ride up just a bit more. "Yeah, I guess-I mean I like your class Ms.-er- Meg, but other than that I sometimes go on Deviant-art. No museums or stuff like that."
"Uh-huh." said Megan flatly. "I meant to say - is my class fun?"
"Oh, um..." the girl shirked a bit in attempt to weigh her word, and taking a little too much time to be seen as honest, she gave her double chinned head a little nod.
"Oh..." said Megan sounding a bit disappointed.
"Well to be honest I'm majoring in web services- coder, I mean a computer net worker and designer....So I'm not really the best judge." Explained the girl hastily in attempt to make up for her previous answer. "I kind of signed up for this class as a last second course thing. But it's not your fault though. I'm terrible at the regular drawing! (Fat finger and arm smudges had made it quite frustrating for the girl to nail down details and Ms. Porter had noticed that over the three weeks she had taught her Raquel had been unable to concentrate on getting the basics first, instead of copying digital flare and art she'd seen elsewhere.) The earnest to please look crossed Raquel's face again and Ms. Porter felt it- that urge to draw the sad melancholic face it needed to be traced- something about this girl- even her face it was like she was the golden ratio of drawing proportions.
Raquel noticing the stares decided to go on "But today was fun!" she insisted perking up a bit.
"Good. But it's fine really. I mean I understand" Megan took another sip. "Ummm- your a junior right?" she asked hap haphazardly chancing her memory banks.
"..Actually I'm a sophomore I kinda got held back once in elementary school." explained the brunette again attempting to shrink into herself as her pale skin turned just a hint of a lighter shade of red. "It's kind of embarrassing but I turned eighteen in July but, I'm still just a sophomore."
"Doh, that's okay. I mean even I honestly failed a couple of classes myself, once or twice while I was in college...But hey you got into this place right? consoled Megan. "It's one of the 'most prestigious academy's around" she continued in a fake regal sounding voice.
Raquel gave a laugh and a nod in return, again one of modesty, feeling like it was her parents checkbook that had got her here rather than her G.P.A. Ms. Porter Watched as Raquel ate another round of cookies, her eating certainly didn't betray the fact that Raquel was familiar with an exorbitant life style, it was good she kept modesty about her. Ms. Porter would never say it aloud, but some of her students could really be flat out BITCHES.
On and on the two chatted going to a variety of topics with nary an interruption...that was until Ms.Porter reached her hand inside and found that the box of thin mints was now entirely empty! The two had downed the entire package (well to be honest Raquel had definitely had the lions share of the box) but still they both had been so enthralled they'd barely noticed.
Raquel seemed to notice this and immediately turned red. "Sorry. I didn't mean-."
"Not at all I'm glad we both like them so much!" said the ever positive Ms. Porter. "It really is nice to sit and just talk with one of my students." she noted getting up with a short stretch. This time Raquel did not follow after her. " Well thanks for taking me in.Maybe you could come over to my place next time, and give me some tips on how I can make my class fun, I seem to be having a bit of trouble with most of my other students."
As she got up Megan took the picture in her hands one more time, fondly studying her work for one last time.
"Umm...You can take that back if you want..." Offered Raquel noticing Megan's pensiveness towards the picture. "Or you could draw me again...I guess.
"Really!" exclaimed an elated Megan. "That would be great! I couldn't give you another week off of homework of course but, maybe a few extra credit points on next weeks test?"
"Sure!" said Raquel giving her teacher another double thumbs up.
"Okay, say maybe tomorrow over at my place around 4?"
"Umm..." hesitated Raquel a little off put by how quick Megan had answered. Oh, what was she thinking, Ms. Porter was nice, this was her teacher she'd just been talking with her over cookies, and it wasn't like she had anything other to do tomorrow night. Sure it was a little odd to be drawn again in private by your art teacher, but Raquel didn't mind and Ms. Porter seemed quite happy by the idea. "Sure, that works for me."
"Great." said Ms. Porter her mind working a mile a minute by this jolt of inspiration! "I just have one more thing to ask if you come."
"Sure Meg what is it?"
"Well...Could you..."
