Chapter #49

Alice's Burgeoning Blues

    by: Unknown
'Ug, I hate this color yellow. It shows anything that gets on it. Especially my stupid hair!'

Melissa made a face and plucked an offending strand of long black hair from her mustard-yellow blouse, letting it fall to the cafeteria floor. Alice glanced up and sighed, absentmindedly jabbing at her uneaten cheesy potatoes.

'I think your hair is very pretty. Mine is boring.' Her voice was monotone. Right now, Alice was experiencing all kinds of jealousy with Mel's looks - she couldn't help but notice how her hair framed her big blue eyes, her easy smile, her continued thinness - and above all, how these things directly contrasted with herself!

'Are you kidding Alice? I'd trade with you any day,' Mel said, noting her companion's deadpan attitude. 'Hey Al... what'd those potatoes ever do to you? Just put them out of their misery, already.'

Alice's mouth twisted into an unconvincing smile. 'Oh, uh... I really shouldn't. I've been eating too much recently...'

It certainly wasn't an overstatement. After Ronnie's warning, Alice had made every excuse in the book to keep away from the abandoned track, and had quickly slipped back into her old routine. She couldn't help but think of the shock Mother would have if she discovered how much Alice ate each day! Between the usual meals, she was also incited into inumerous snacks, cakes and sweets by Hillary, not to mention her tummy-torturing feasts at Ronnie's! Her delicate metabolism, used to a simple diet of leaves and rice, simply wasn't prepared for the onslaught of calories. Over the course of two weeks, she'd managed to put back on everything she had lost running - and more! Once again, her belly bulged uncomfortably against the buttons of her uniform, and even bulged over the waistband of her favorite jeans!

Mel snorted, smiling. 'Tell me about it. It's been too long since we've run, but we've just been so busy! Culinary arts is really killing me - the teacher is a little bit of a prick when it comes to grading.'

Alice again looked over Mel's slender form enviously. 'Yes, but you don't really have to run. You look just as good as ever...'

'Really? I guess it isn't that visible, but my all this food is finally catching up to me. I just checked yesterday - I've gained six pounds! It's not too bad, but I just feel... soft, all over. I'm not used to it.'

Alice looked her over again. If one looked closer, you could see it - the raven-haired girl had gained some weight. But in contrast to Alice, Mel's metabolism was killer, and her muscles firm and well-developed. Her slight gain had only transformed her from scrawny to slender - in fact, she looked healthier than before!

Alice sighed. Compared to Mel, she felt like a whale! Her belly was starting to jiggle, for pete's sake!

Mel continued eating her burger as Alice fought off the urge to scarf her now masticated potatoes. She knew she shouldn't... but she was still hungry!

'H-hey Mel?' She put forth, suddenly feeling timid.

'Yesh?' Mel answered through a mouthful of pizza.

'Can we... start running again? Tomorrow? Just around campus, or something? Maybe we could ask to use the gym room. It's just... I'm eating way too much.' She pinched some tummy chub for emphasis.

Mel sat back, patting her own lithe stomach thoughtfully. 'Hm. Tomorrow's Saturday, right? Well, let me think...'
