Chapter #54

Foiled by Fences!

"Wow." Was all the two girls could say. It would appear that Ronnie's previous speech about the track being off-limit's hadn't instilled the level of confidence that the RA had required... Or maybe it was just dumb luck and coincidence. Either way, the track's gate had been changed, rather dramatically. Two large padlocks now adorned the gate, both gleaming in the sunlight, obviously brand new. Secondly, large coils of barbed wire now surrounded the entire top of the fence, making the track look less like a area of fitness and more like a P.O.W. camp.

"What the hell!?" Mel yelled loudly, her anger boiling over, even going so far as to run up to the gate and kick it. "Jeeze, I mean, I know it was off limits, but seriously, what was the harm in us running around on it? Seriously? This school's priorities are all out of wack!" Mel fumed as she stood at the gate. Alice walked up and stared through the gate sadly.

"You know, if I had to guess, I'd say we probably aren't the reason it's locked up..." Alice said quietly as she scanned the track. "Look, all the cans are gone. They probably figured out that girls were drinking out here-" (or who knows what else, Alice thought to herself) "and beefed up security a bit. "Odds are, they were sick of the nice track being used for something so... Not nice." Alice finished weakly, unable to accurately articulate her thoughts. Mel kicked the gate again for good measure before turning and walking away at a brisk pace- her tight shorts hugging her butt in an almost lewd manner.

"Come on, Alice, we're not giving up. We're gonna run around campus one way or another."

-----

And so, the girls ran around campus... Or at least, attempted to. The two bloated beauties could barely run at a moderate pace for five minutes before slowing down to an almost embarrassingly slow jog- something that angered Mel to no end. "Why... Can't I... Do this?" She moaned through gritted teeth as she struggled to gain her breath again. "Seriously... This is..." She tapered off, her frown becoming more pronounced by the second. Alice could do nothing but stare straight ahead, her mouth clenched shut as her nostrils flared with struggling breaths. If Mel thought she was struggling, well, Alice couldn't image how Mel would be acting if she knew how hard Alice was fighting to stay upright. Finally, after almost ten minutes of walking, Mel tugged at Alice's sleeve.

"Come on, Alice, we gotta start up again. We're gonna fight through this together."

And they probably would have, if they hadn't gotten busted.

-----

The two girls sat, dejectedly, in the reception area in front of Ms. Polluck's office for what seemed like eternity. Mel's scowl was more pronounced than ever, while Alice's lip trembled in the universal symbol of "I'm going to burst into tears as soon as I try to speak". The two girls looked quite silly, each clad in their overly small running clothes, their hair disheveled and their faces red, despite having been sitting for at least ten minutes.

They were making good time and good progress- well, relatively speaking- when they had heard yelling, only to find a rather strict-looking teacher charging their way, wearing a button down dress shirt and skirt that looked as though it had stopped fitting 15 pounds prior. After breathlessly trying to chew out the girls (and failing to do so), the teacher had simply told them to follow her, and now... Well, here we are.

"We're going to get expelled..." Was all Alice could think as she sat in silence, her heart beating harder than it had the whole time they had been running.

"I'm going to scream..." Was all Mel could think as she sat in silence, although it wasn't out of panic, it was out of anger.

Finally, a muffled "You can come in, girls!" rang out from beyond the massive wooden doors, and the two girls made their way inside Ms. Polluck's office, only to find...

The woman beaming at them. No scowl look, no angry reprimand, no writing up the girls for breaking school policy, just an eager smile. "Please, sit! We do have a lot to discuss, you know..." The woman said in a quiet voice, tenting her fingers patiently as the two girls sat in front of her. "I sure hope you didn't think you were in trouble!" She said with a laugh, as she pushed a rather large bowl of candy towards the two girls. "Here, take a piece or two, I know I certainly can't get enough of the stuff!" Both girls remained motionless, Mel's arms crossed while Alice sat nervously with her hands clenched in her lap. "Now, I'm not here to waste either of your time, so let us get right down to brass tacks! According to one of our staff members, you two were running around campus, correct?" Alice nodded meekly while Mel continued to stare. "Now, unfortunately, that is against our campus policy! Liability concerns, and all that... There was an incident a while ago, there was talks of, ahem, legal actions, so to speak, and in order to appease the family (who happened to consist of mostly alumni from our fine school, you see) we were required to instill a campus-wide policy." Polluck said all of this without once losing her characteristic smile or cheerful voice- but this had no effect on Mel, who chose to finally burst out.

"No offense, Ms. Polluck, but that sounds like a load of crap!" Ms. Polluck did not react to Mel's outburst in the slightest, simply smiling at the girl as she continued. "Seriously, who's ever heard of a ban on exercise! I mean, this whole thing just seems like a joke! Even that old track-" Mel began, but quickly bit her tongue after realizing what she just said... She had effectively just incriminated both herself and Alice! Alice let out a groan from her seat.

"Ah... Yes, the commemorative track." Ms. Polluck said, her grin faltering for only a split second before returning, wider than ever. "Ah, youth, the time for inquiries and curiousness... One would think that a padlocked gate would be enough to keep you students away from the place, but it would seem a few bad eggs still managed to get in. As I'm sure you're both aware, that track is off limits for reasons that do not need to be shared with many, but the fact remains that it is off-limits." Even when smiling, Polluck's words rang fiercely, not angrily, but still strongly enough to make Alice feel even worse. "Now, I can understand your girl's frustration! After all, a good bit of exercise does help bolster spirits. That being said, what you two were doing today can result in lots of paperwork and... Unpleasantness for both staff and students alike, so I need the two of you to promise me that you won't do it again."

The two girls nodded, Alice even whimpering out an "I'm sorry..." Without bursting into tears- a near Herculean feat for the very upset girl.

"Now, there ARE options for you two, if you do feel that you don't have enough... Activeness in your life."
