"It is the old and terrible secret to why alicorns live for so long." She started to explain. Celestia was unsure what her student will think of her, once she finishes the explanation. "Alicorns were very few in the old days but they lived for so long, because they absorbed the lifespan of other ponies." Celestia saw Twilights eyes widen at this. She was clearly shocked but now there was no backing out anymore. "It basically became an instinct, the instinct you are feeling, to devour non alicorns and absorb their lifeforce and lifespan as they digested." Now that she finished the explanation, Celestia waited for Twilights reaction.
The mind of the new alicorn was racing. The hunger was telling her to eat other ponies? What would happen if she couldn't hold back anymore? Then something else hit her. "P-princessess... you have lived for more than a thousand years, does that mean you?" She didn't want to finish that sentence. The thought of Celestia or Luna devouring ponies forced itself into her head but for some reason she didn't find the image of them forcing ponies down their throats that horrifying. For a moment, she even imagined herself, having somepony slide down into her belly.
"It is true, Twilight Sparkle." Luna then continued for her sister. "In order to ensure that we can protect Equestria, we lenghten our lives by this method. But rest assured, only the most wicked criminals lifes end in our bellies. We turn to innocents only if no other option is available." The two of them really hoped, this would calm Twilight down somewhat. It was true, in the rare case a pony commited a really heinous crime and was sentenced to death, the execution was never shown. "Also, we use our magic to render the victim unconscious. No matter what the criminal does, being alive and awake for digestion is too horrible of a punishment." In her thoughts, Luna had to admit though, with King Sombra it was tempting to eat him and then listen to his screams as the stomach acids dissolved him while he watched. But for now, they hoped that this explanation laid Twilights fears to rest.
