They have to step through the doorway rather carefully, as there is rubble everywhere they step.
Harry spotted something straight away. There was something off about the damage to the door. He turned to Hermione to get her opinion, but she was going from stall to stall looking for Myrtle.
It was the angle, he decided. The hole blasted in through the window was clearly where the blast had come from, but it didn't line up with the door. He almost dismissed it, when he heard Hermione talking with Myrtle, he decided to investigate further.
He tracked back the blast pattern from the door and it lead to a pillar rather than the window. His fingers traced over the surface of the pillar. It crumbled beneath his touch, exactly where a blast of magic would have had to have ricocheted to hit the door. He looked from one side to the other, and this was clearly the point where things changed direction.
He ran his hand again over the pillar. It wasn't magical or a particularly strong type of stone.
The limestone crumbled as he touched it. Again he almost dismissed it, there was too much going on today to worry about one pillar in all this devastation both human and material. But a glimmer of something came from there.
He rubbed harder and the pillar continued to reveal something more.
It was a book, a small book. But not rough and ready, it was ornately decorated with an embossed Hogwarts crest on the cover.
Scrapping his fingernails he managed to get it out.
He flicked it open to the front page, wondering if it was some student project or what not.
But he caught his breath as he looked.
Written inside in bold but elegant capitals, "Hogwarts: The Rules"
Underneath that was the part that surprised Harry, were the names.
Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and at the bottom, Helga Hufflepuff.
They looked genuine, to Harry's untrained eye. But every student knew their signatures.
He was about to show it Hermione. When the writing vanished into a puff of pale black smoke as the ink lifted off the page, then it disappeared in the light breeze from the window.
His call died in his throat, there was nothing to show Hermione anymore.
