I slammed the jeep into reverse. There was something other worldly about the police. I couldn't put my finger on it at first, there was just an eerie feeling that something was not right. Thinking back on it now, I remember that they all had the same face. No, that is ridiculous. They all had the same look of threatening desperation and hollowness. Pale, stretched and angry. I drove as quickly as I could back to my lodge.
The lights were on inside. I had turned them off, I am certain of it. I thought I saw a shadow passing the window. Maybe it was Frank or Miss Garfield. Maybe the landlord had come back. But there was a high pitched whine coming from inside and the birds in the forest had stopped singing.
Cautiously, I approached the door and put my key in the lock. No need. The door was slightly open. I gave it a short, quiet push and went inside.
