Krystal couldn't believe that Beck had given her the cold shoulder. So she decided she better get back to her mystery because her publisher had insisted on a deadline. She said to herself, "I'm such a sissy! What's wrong with a little fog in the air?"
She shrugged her shoulders and started walking towards the house.
She kept walking and walking but couldn't see the house. "I cannot be lost," she said. "I never get lost."
As she was wondering where the house had disappeared into, her foot slipped. She was almost going to fall down but she held onto a tree branch just in time to see that she had come by the side of a lake covered with algae.
She saw the floating form of a corpse mostly hidden by the weeds. She felt a scream rising to her throat but she held her composure.
The corpse opened his eyes and said, "You're the chosen. Nothing dies but this planet may come to pass. Its progress is a myth. It will be grand power versus grand loss. Now you go and let them know. Forget everything else. You have a job to do on a grand scale. I'll lead you on. You're not alone! Now go get to it, go! Now!"
Krystal turned to see if there was anyone else around but the woods seemed empty and the fog had lifted a little. She made out the vague form of the house in the distant. She started running toward it.
As she reached the French doors, she heard her cell phone ring, the sound of which comforted her. She ran upstairs to her desk and picked up the cell phone. As soon as she pushed the button her phone went dead.
"I have to go into town and call the police and the media," she thought.
"No, we won't let you!" A rough husky voice answered her thoughts.
She turned around to the sound of the voice. She saw nothing. She picked up her purse with one hand and held her gun with the other.
She opened her mouth to say, "Who are you?" but no sound could escape from her lips. She frowned at her own shivering. She wasn't the kind to be afraid. Or so she had thought. Yet she knew she couldn't give in. Probably the corpse was right. All this wasn't her imagination as she was suspecting at the back of her mind. She had a job to do. But what?
She decided to get back out again. It will be safer out in the open air she thought. She ran downstairs. She scrambled from door to door, from window to window only to find them shut tight. Someone had welded down everything.
She held her purse in her underarm and pointed the gun in front of her. With her other hand she yanked a lamp off from a side table and hurled it at a window but the glass wouldn't break. She tried to break other windows, other doors. It was of no use. She was caged in.
It started getting dark. Outside a strange wind had started to howl. She heard a crash, then a thunder. As another lightning hit the ground, she saw from the window a huge, gray, eerie and globular aircraft land on the grass. The craft's doors opened and out came some indistinguishable forms.
