Chapter #4

Choosing the "contestants"

by: Mr. Scratch Author IconMail Icon
The three silent teenagers looked at the board and waited for something to happen. The demon seemed to take its time and enjoyed the fear, the three had.

Then finally, after what felt like years of waiting, some pictures appeared on the board. On the top rectangle on the far left was a picture of a 18 years old boy with blond hair. He was very muscular and was wearing a red and white football jacket. Julie immediately recognized him.

“Phil Anderson? The quarterback?”, she asked and was surprised that she could talk again. Phil was the kind of boy Julie despised. Julie never was a girly girl. Sure, she loved to wear skirts sometimes, even dresses but that was the only thing. That was why she was usually hanging out with Steven and Jason. They had just much more in common than the other girls who usually wanted to talk about their hair or their next date. Julie was not really into shopping either.

“Yeah. I know you don’t like him. I thought he might be a perfect first swappee for you.”, the voice explained.

Then in the next rectangle, the one designated for Steven, appeared a picture of a middle aged woman with long brown hair. It did not even took a second for Steven to recognize who this was.

“My mom?!”, he asked angrily. “I’m not going to swap anything with my mom!”.

“How cute.”, laughed the voice. “After all I’ve said you still think you have a choice. You humans are really amusing.”.

Steven looked down at the picture and tried to suppress his anger. His mom was working as a school secretary, likely not the school he was attending. She was still happily married and had two kids, Steven and his little brother Benjamin.

A deep chuckle could be heard again. The demon seemed to be entertained very well not like the three.

The next and last picture which was designated for Jason showed a geeky girl with thick glasses and braces. She had fuzzy, black hair pulled in a ponytail and freckles. She looked to be around Jason’s age.

“Hey! How come everyone gets someone they know but me?!”, asked Jason the cloud. The three were still not sure if the cloud was the demon or something else but they had nothing else they could talk to.

“Oh, you know her. This is Emily Harrison. You were in the same class all elementary school. She had a crush on you, probably still has but she was always too shy to talk to you and you were too self-fixated to even notice her. To be honest, I couldn’t find a better subject for you. You’re just too average and too hard to anger.”, the voice explained. Steven tried to confirm if the voice was coming out of the cloud but it seemed like it came from every angle.

“Good.”, the voice then continued. “Now that we have your swap partners, my victims, let’s see what it is you will be swapping.”.

A deep, evil laugh could be heard and the cards Steven had dropped suddenly levitated from the ground.

“Draw a card.”. The cards were floating before Julie. She slowly draw a card from the deck. Just when she had it drawn from the deck, it vanished and appeared faced down on the board beneath Phil Anderson’s picture. The cards then floated over to Steven, who draw a card, and to Jason.

Now there were the three pictures and three cards on the board.

“Now, let’s see what you will swap.”.
