"Reward?" you ask, suddenly intrigued by the smiling girl and her companions. "How much?"
"I thought that might get your attention," Iris said with a girlish smile and a twirl of her hair. "Let's just say. . . I have powerful connections." She paused, smiling. "Are you in?"
"Here's the thing. . ." you say, skeptically. "I sure as hell am not your babysitter." She looked offended by your choice of words -- which was exactly the effect you had wanted. "I'm not just going to jump into this unless there's something in it for me. Something guaranteed."
"She's not going to tell you anything until I know that we can trust you," growled Sapphire.
Iris laughed as she patted the dragon on the neck lovingly, "If that were true, we'd never get to tell him anything."
You momentarily admire the obvious relationship between the travelers, but shake off the feeling quickly. "I don't have all day, so you better convince me quickly. I have important matters to attend to elsewhere."
Iris' eyes glisten with a silent laughter at your seriousness. Why does she find everything about you so humorous? Your heart hardens a bit at the ignorant child, but you can't quite figure out why she affects you so much.
Suddenly, you hear the twang of a bow and the screech of a dragon -- Blaze has been struck by an arrow. The world spins for a moment in a dizzying wave of commotion, but you steady yourself and try to take in as much information as you can. Another arrow whizzes past, narrowly missing the girl. It's an ambush.
