Quit

Seras wanted no part of the mission any longer because there was no profit to be had and a lot of danger involved. This was not good to induce her interest in a mission. Cultists were not likely to have a lot of money because they were usually fanatics who would die for their cause and gave everything to the cult. At the main temple, there might be a lot of treasure if they didn’t spend it on decorations that were hard to move or sell. She had once secured a golden statue and been forced to use a lot of time and effort in melting it down because no one wanted the strange multilegged figure whole.

The cults like the one of Basha were especially bad because they were in many places and they would hunt her down for the rest of her life. Being forced to look over your shoulders for the rest of your life was not a healthy or happy way to live. Seras knew of a fence who was still attacked on occasion by cultists who worshiped some sort of aquatic being because he had only sold an object precious to them twenty years ago. The cult of Basha was much larger and competent than they were. Most cults were filled with clueless clods who were stupid at best and were more likely a hindrance. Basha cultists were trained hunters and tracks for whom hunting down and killing things was part of their worship.

She hired a messenger to return the offered wages for the job and her politest apology for being unable to complete the job. Seras knew the King would be than unhappy that she had denied completing a job he had requested but she was more afraid of the cultist than she was of the King. Emeril was a smart man but he had a hot temper. In time his anger would cool off but it might be better to not be around for a few weeks in case he hired an assassin for her.

Taking a vacation didn’t seem like such a bad idea, she could spend some the hard earned loot she had taken in over the years. There was the safe house she had built in Curiosity Cove on the pirate haven of San Maria or she could work on creating a new identity with a clean history to it because she had lost one recently in a raid to some guards. It was fun going down the prison and seeing how many wanted posters there were for her.
