The wizard lit up the portal crafting a link to where she wanted to go and prepared her best defensive spells. It would be a shame to destroy what had taken so long to build and she felt it was worth a little risk. She overcharged a ring if her gamble proved foolish and stepped through the shimmering surface and into a new place filled with darkness. No light met her eyes and she was worried that she had gotten the wrong location. Most portals were placed in the sun where they could draw power from the sun. Marina drew power from the ring and lit the room.
She wished there was more information about this portal but Dreze had destroyed so many records of ages past in his quest to be the only one with knowledge about his lands. Marina wasn’t sure who had built this portal but runes started to illuminate the room revealing fine stone craftsmanship. The room looked like it had just been cleaned without a spot of dust or web in sight but she was sure it had been many years since anyone had touched this room. Dreze had performed a purge of all the dwarves who were too strong of will to fall to his mind control. Her former master not only wanted obedience to his commands but he wanted a facade of love for him.
Dreze had always had a great ego and she had often manipulated him by stroking it to get access to new spells or magic items. She often wondered how much he believed or if he even cared that she was lying to him. It would have been nice if she could believe he had been corrupted by the Azara Stone but the stone had no influence over the user, the only evil of the stone was what the person used it for. It had given her master the ability to take command of the land and she wondered if Dreze had slain the royal family or if they were locked away somewhere as nearly mindless playthings for him when it amused him.
Cautiously walking around the room she looked for warnings of dangers in the runes in case traps had been left by the dwarfs. They tended to be protective of their secrets and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they had placed a trap for an outsider using their portal. The good thing about dwarves is they liked to be consistent with their language so even over great time and distances they could be read.
These were the Halls of the Keepers of Stone who would do what needed to be done to protect their secrets, she read. Marina had heard of them but they were supposed to have vanished over a thousand years ago. Questions swirled in her mind about how she had gotten the access to this place, the information on the portal had not suggested it was a place this old or fabled. Had it been just an accident or was there more at work here?
